Democrat Memogate: As the Wagons Circle

Freedom Line On April 19, Jonathan Groner published a brief piece in Legal Times. The lead sentence read: "The Virginia State Bar has rejected an ethics complaint filed last December against Elaine Jones, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund."

Further in the piece, David Kendall, Ms. Jones' lead attorney, was quoted as saying, "Ms. Jones is guilty of being a dynamic civil rights leader, but that's hardly the basis for a bar complaint. Her 34-year record as a member of the Virginia State Bar remains unblemished."

Well, well, well. That would be the same David Kendall who, in a brief defending Ms. Jones' attempt to have Senator Kennedy stack the judicial deck in her pending legal case, complained that the Center for Individual Freedom was not abiding by the confidentiality request of the Virginia State Bar.

Help Keep the Heat on Senator Teddy Kennedy!

Freedom Line Earlier this week, the Center for Individual Freedom sent an e-mail requesting support for our efforts to end the corruption and manipulation of the judicial confirmation process. We thank those of you who have already sent contributions, as your support has brought us that much closer to our goal of raising $22,500 from online donations in the next two weeks.

If you have not yet responded to our appeal, please remember that the Center's ad campaigns, legal activities and advocacy are expensive. We need your support to bring honesty and integrity back to our government -- traits Senator Teddy Kenney's office forgot long ago, as demonstrated by his former staff when they sought to manipulate and influence the University of Michigan affirmative action cases.

Beam Me Up, Kofi!

Freedom Line The United Nations has long been a bastion of hope for the naive idealists who seek a Star Trek-like nirvana under a benevolent global government.

But recent stories revealing widespread corruption in its Iraqi Oil-for-Food program demonstrate that the U.N. is little better than a third-rate banana republic where bureaucrats line their own pockets and bribery, kickbacks and pay-offs are the order of the day.

State Issues:

Importing Liability

Legislative Update Governor Jim Doyle needs to take a basic course in the American tort system. As he leaps onboard the prescription drug importation bandwagon -- touting "savings" for Wisconsinites and the state's red-inked budget -- Doyle is turning a blind eye to the legal consequences of his plan, not to mention its real monetary cost. Wisconsin is not just importing prescription drugs but legal liability, too.

Wisconsin will be liable when one of its citizens is hospitalized or even dies after taking an unsafe medication purchased from a Canadian pharmacy "featured" on his state's Prescription Drug Resource Center website. And when -- not if -- that happens, the taxpayers will be left holding the bill for the state's legal expenses and the plaintiff's verdict, as well.

Jester's Courtroom: Tales Stranger Than Fiction
Featuring bizarre and sometimes humorous real life stories from the courtroom.

Playboy Model Wrestles With Her Image, In Court

Jester's Courtroom Kitana Baker, one of the models who gained fame by mud wrestling over whether Miller Lite "tastes great" or is "less filling" in the beer's "Catfight Girl" television advertisements, is now suing a Los Angeles entertainment company for ruining her reputation.

Baker alleges that Backyard Wrestling, Inc., used her image to promote "offensive" video games after tricking her into signing a broad talent release for her appearance in one of the company's videos.

In her lawsuit, Baker claims she agreed to appear in a "Backyard Wrestling Babes" video after being assured the video would be done "in a high-class manner and would not be in any way graphic." She also claims that, while she agreed to perform a "Playboy style" striptease, she "would not under any circumstances ... engage in any wrestling."

Since then, Baker, a Playboy Lingerie Model of the Year, alleges Backyard Wrestling has ruined her reputation by using her likeness as a wrestler in its X-rated video games. Baker, who says she was outraged by the unauthorized depiction, has demanded $1 million in damages and an order stopping the video company from using her image in an upcoming sequel to the game.

According to its website, Backyard Wrestling is principally engaged in producing videos that "highlight the most outrageous, violent, shocking and sexy footage from real backyard wrestling matches all across America." The company did not comment on Baker's lawsuit.

"I do admit that reading these documents on an unprotected server to help defend the president's embattled nominees was political hardball, and I have learned that one shouldn't play political hardball with limpwristed teammates."
