THE O'MALLEY FACTOR
In response to your flood of calls and emails to Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley
- who refused to provide Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich the names of firefighters who
were involved in the rescue of victims of a freak water taxi accident a couple
weeks ago - the Democrat mayor has pointed the finger at...someone else. "I
deferred in this decision to the wishes of the Fire Chief of Baltimore City who
felt that any celebrations of valor were too soon," he writes in a "form" email
to many of you who contacted his office.
But in a separate email to News & Views reader Alan Bessey, O'Malley adds that
the chief told him the firefighter "personnel had not even undergone post trauma
debriefing yet." Huh? Is he kidding? You can't commend heroism until there's
a "post trauma debriefing" for the heroes? For the victims, maybe. But the
FIREFIGHTERS? That's insane. And the mayor bought it?
Shifting blame to someone who works for him and has no real choice but to play
along with the mayor's partisan political games. What a profile in political
courage, huh? And just how can giving heroic actions by firefighters a
well-deserved pat on the back come "too soon"? Sounds like O'Malley might be
angling for a spot on John Kerry's ticket.
MEMOGATE UPDATE
For an update on the sorry state of affairs surrounding those explosive
Judiciary Committee memos showing Democrat collusion and obstruction of the
President's judicial nominees, check out this story in Insight Magazine:

INQUIRING MINDS WANNA KNOW
"There's only one question I have for President Clinton. Why didn't you consider
Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda a strategic threat? Why when they declared war on
us -- give me your reason for not declaring war on them"
- Former Sen. Bob Kerrey, a member of the 9/11 commission, in a New York Post
interview
VEEP WARNS OF THE TAX MAN
"At last count, candidate Kerry had offered 73 new spending proposals. So far,
he's provided details for just 28 of those 73 - and they alone would add $1.7
trillion in new spending by the federal government over 10 years. . . . It turns
out John Kerry has voted in the Senate at least 350 times for higher taxes. That
averages to one vote for higher taxes every three weeks, for almost two decades.
At least the folks in Massachusetts knew he was on the job."
- Vice President Dick Cheney
KERRY'S LAME-O RESPONSE
"They found Dick Cheney in an undisclosed location and brought him out to attack
me. That seems to be his designated role, not to create jobs, but to attack
John Kerry."
- John Kerry
DO AS WE SAY, NOT AS WE DID
"I see where the people of Haiti finally got sick of defrocked collectivist
priest and all-around 'necklace' killer Jean-Bertrand Aristide, took up arms,
and kicked him out. So what are U.S. forces doing there now? About 1,800 of our
guys have been sent in to -- in the words of Associated Press reporter Paisley
Dodds -- 'rid the nation of guns.'
"Hey, good plan. In the great tradition of George Washington, Francis Marion,
and young Jim Monroe, the Haitian people just used firearms to throw out a
vicious tyrant, and the immediate goal of Big White Brother is to 'rebuild a
shattered police force and disarm militants who began the insurgency.' . . . How
do you think the people of the proud, young, free United States of America would
have reacted if some foreign army had arrived here in 1783 with the declared the
goal of 'ridding the nation of the guns' that had just been used to win
America's freedom?"

THIS WEEK'S "MUTH'S TRUTHS"
The bureaucrats running "Old Europe" have struck a blow against an American
company that could spark a world-wide trade war. Check out this week's Muth's
Truth's column on how the Euro-weenies stuck it royally to Microsoft at

ROVING MOB
"A mob supporting illegal immigrants harassed presidential adviser Karl Rove and
his family at their home yesterday. Hundred of demonstrators surrounded Mr.
Rove's home in Northwest (Washington, DC), pounding on his windows, The
Washington Post reports. . . . The protesters said they were rallying for a bill
that would legalize the status of illegals who graduate from high school in the
United States, and would qualify them for in-state college tuition."
- Greg Pierce's "Inside Politics," 3/30/04
SLAVERY REPARATIONS
"Supposed 'descendants' of slaves filed a $1 billion lawsuit against U.S. and
British corporations, citing genocide committed against their ancestors. . . .
The ugly truth here is that this whole reparations-for-slavery drive is being
pushed by people who hope to rise to positions of power and influence on the
back of the heritage of slavery. Add to that an ever-growing number of people
who cannot accept the responsibility for where they are in their lives. Can't
find a good job? Blame slavery. On drugs? Blame slavery. In jail? Blame slavery.
Yeah .. it sure is a lot easier than taking responsibility yourself. . . .
Instead of going out and actually working for a living, these money-grubbing
whiners actually think they can extort money from corporations under the guise
of 'reparations.' "

UNION VS. UNION
The Teamsters Union is in open conflict with their "brothers" over at the post
office. The Teamsters, who represent workers at some private delivery
companies, are urging Congress in print ads to stop "unfair competition" by the
post office.
Congress is mulling a comprehensive postal reform package which the postal
workers union has been opposing from the get-go. On the other hand, the
Teamsters sound down-right free-marketish in their ad (http://www.postcom.org/public/2004/teamsters.ad.pdf).
Among the things the Teamsters urge Congress to do with reform legislation:
"Prevent the Postal Service from using billions in profits from its first class
mail monopoly to subsidize other services and keep prices on package delivery
artificially low." They also call for an end to the USPS "exemption from
federal, state and local taxes, licensing requirements, parking tickets and
favorable borrowing rates from the U.S. Treasury."
This may be a first: I agree with the Teamsters on a public policy issue.

reform this year, sign up for our free updates at

"CHRISTIAN NATION" VOTED DOWN BY CONGRESS
"On February 3, 1863, eleven Protestant denominations (including United
Presbyterians and the Methodist Episcopalian General Conference) organized the
National Reform Association. Their aim was to 'reform' the Constitution and one
of its principle purposes was to amend (the Constitution) to 'indicate that this
is a Christian nation.' The association formally petitioned Congress to amend
the preamble of the Constitution so as to read: 'We, the people of the United
States, HUMBLY ACKNOWLEDGING ALMIGHTY GOD AS THE SOURCE OF ALL AUTHORITY AND
POWER IN CIVIL GOVERNMENT, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AS THE RULER AMONG THE NATIONS,
HIS REVEALED WILL AS THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND, IN ORDER TO CONSTITUTE A
CHRISTIAN GOVERNMENT, AND in order to form a more perfect union.' This change
was not enacted."
