CLARKE'S STORY CONTINUES TO CRUMBLE
"Richard Clarke has presented an image as a non-partisan bureaucrat who
dispassionately became a critic of the Bush administration's terrorism record.
He has cited the fact that he voted in the 2000 Republican primary for president
as evidence of his objectivity. But his non-partisan facade is crumbling. He
admitted to Tim Russert of NBC yesterday that he voted for Al Gore in 2000.
Federal Election Commission records show he has made no contributions to
Republicans. They do show that in 2002, while he was still a White House aide,
he gave $2,000 to Steven Andreasen, a Clinton defense official who was running
for Congress. This year, he also gave $1,000 to Jamie Metzl, another former
Clinton aide, who is a candidate for Congress in Missouri."

THE COMING CAMPAIGN
"We now know how Campaign 2004 will unfold: A Democrat will accuse President
Bush of having started the Chicago fire, or poisoning Halloween candy, or
whatever. The news media will trumpet the charges, no matter how preposterous.
When Bush aides deny the charges, and provide evidence refuting them,
journalists will accuse Mr. Bush of making 'personal attacks.' Exhibit A for
this pattern is the sordid saga of Richard Clarke, arguably the least credible
whistleblower in American history."

KERRY'S KOVER-UP
"John Kerry mentions his service in Vietnam so frequently that it has become a
running joke on the campaign press plane. He seldom if ever mentions his
POST-war activities as a national coordinator and principal spokesman for
Vietnam Veterans Against the War, a group he says he quit in 1971 because he was
concerned about its radical agenda. One reason may be that a credibility gap has
started to widen over his antiwar history, and he clearly doesn't want to
discuss it at length. His campaign is issuing misleading and evasive statements
on his antiwar service in a way that would do the Pentagon spinners of the
Johnson and Nixon administrations proud."

BOTTOM-OF-THE-SEA TREATY

resource-grab. Today treaty proponents argue that the Reagan objections have
been fixed. . . . But the treaty's central flaw remains unfixable: It is not in
the best interests of the U.S. to have its maritime activities -- military or
economic -- subject to the control of a highly politicized U.N. bureaucracy.

THE "RIGHT" TO BROADBAND
"I read the Constitution again last night. I was looking for that article and
section where it said that it was the function of the federal government to make
sure that high-speed Internet connections were available to all Americans. Do
you know what? I couldn't find it! It's just not there! But George Bush
is...now proposing some sort of a government program to guarantee universal
Internet access in the United States. Not just dial-up, mind you...but
high-speed service.

take property (money) away from people who have worked for and earned it and use
that property to pay for Internet service for people who, for whatever reason,
have achieved the status of economic loser. What's next? Guaranteed cell phone
service?"

CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW...
"Congress is patting itself on the back after passing legislation recently that
expands the power of the Federal Communications Commission to crack down on
broadcasters with heavy new $500,000 fines. . . . In doing so, Congress ignored
a fundamental truth: government control over radio and television broadcasts is
incompatible with a free society. FCC control of broadcast content, whether
through licensing, regulations, or fines, is naked censorship that is utterly at
odds with the plain words of the First Amendment. . . . When it comes to
decency, the American people should stop looking to government and start looking
at themselves."

DEFEND IT, DON'T AMEND IT

and believe any changes to it should be made only reverently, discreetly,

and see whether a constitutional (marriage) amendment is necessary before
adopting one. The first rule in these matters should be the same one
Hippocrates proposed in his famous oath for physicians - do no harm. To
federalize the question, and deny each state its own marriage laws, would do
considerable harm to the basic, federalist principle that informs the whole
Constitution."

CANNON FODDER
Rep. Chris Cannon - the Utah Republican who is spearheading legislative efforts
to give illegal aliens special discount college tuition rates which are denied
to many actual Americans - is described as going "over the edge" because of a
series of billboards which have been erected in his congressional district which
read, "Congressman Chris Cannon wants amnesty for illegal aliens. Do you?"
"Over the last couple of weeks," says a ProjectUSA email message yesterday,
"Rep. Cannon has been lashing out at ProjectUSA and other immigration moderates
in a furious attack that includes bizarre charges of secret plots and mass
sterilization conspiracies." Such paranoia and weird behavior won't surprise
anyone who ever heard the former House impeachment manager ramble on about how
Bill Clinton had been brainwashed by secret Chinese agents. I think the
clinical term for his behavior is: "The guy has a screw loose."
Anyway, despite initially blowing off the billboards, Cannon's tights are
clearly up in a twist over them now. In a bizarre letter to his congressional
colleagues last week, Cannon warned ominously that "many of the anti-immigration
groups also have an anti-life agenda."
Huh?
He also sent out a damage-control "spin" letter to GOP activists in his Utah
district, including this invitation: "If you have questions or concerns about
my work on immigration issues, just give me a call on my cell phone, (801)

UGLY POLITICS
Wanna see just how ugly and petty partisan politics can get?
A few weeks ago, a water taxi in Baltimore's Inner Harbor capsized in a sudden
storm. Five persons died, but 20 were rescued by Baltimore City firefighters,
along with some naval reservists who happened to be on the scene when the
accident occurred.
Last week, Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich held a private reception honoring those
involved in saving the terrified passengers. But only a few of the firefighters
involved received an invitation to attend the event. Why? Because Baltimore
Mayor Martin O'Malley is a Democrat and Gov. Ehrlich is a Republican. And
O'Malley wants Ehrlich's job in 2006. So O'Malley refused to provide the
governor's office the names of the firefighters involved in the rescue.
Thanks to purely partisan politics by O'Malley, those heroic public servants one
normally sees running into a building when everyone else is running out (such as
in the World Trade Center terrorist attacks), were denied a well-deserved pat of
the back by the state's top elected official. O'Malley ought to be
ashamed...but then again, we already know that being a Democrat means never
having to say you're sorry for doing something so slimy.
