Do We Need Free Market Principles in Education?

By Janelle Shepard

Monopolies or Competition?

Supply and Demand or Price Controls?

Market Demand or Government Demand?

Pay Well for Quality or Pay MORE for Poor Quality?

I am really pondering now, but I don't have an MBA.

Recently the Governor of Texas set forth a proposal for incentives to promote excellence in education. Rewarding good behavior is a foundation for parenting, business, and society. Rewarding bad behavior only produces more bad behavior, right?

Seems like a simple concept.

Unfortunately, some members of the media, teachers unions and bureaucrats felt this was not a sound principle. <CONTINUED>

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?

Mistrust for the media grows as an Austin reporter sends his article to Ronnie Earle for approval before printing it in the Austin American Statesmen
See EarleofInjustice.com

AUSTIN – Texans For Texas, a grassroots public policy organization representing thousands of citizens across the state, today called for the immediate resignations of Austin American-Statesman editor Richard Oppel and Austin American-Statesman political columnist Dave McNeely for their roles in what Texans For Texas executive director Janelle Shepard called “the most shocking media scandal in recent Texas history.”  (See report in Texas Media Watch)

“That Dave McNeely let one source essentially write his own article is an outrage,” Shepard said. “That Richard Oppel is willing to look the other way is even worse. Just like steroids in professional baseball, the actions of a few rogues have cast a dark cloud of suspicion over an entire profession. The only way this cloud will go away is for McNeely and Oppel to go away. ”   <CONTINUED

ROYALLY RIGHT

The Causes of and Solutions for Teacher Shortages by Royal Masset

Teacher unions are all upset about the changing of teacher certification requirements. They argue that teachers should meet the certification requirements that are now in place. Since there is a teacher shortage, they argue the way to eliminate this shortage is through paying all teachers higher salaries. Many editorial boards have chimed in about not allowing unqualified teachers into the classroom. <CONTINUED>

REFORM TEXAS

Let's Give Parents a True Choice in Where Their Children Attend
School by Bill Peacock

For many Texas schoolchildren, our system of public education is not making the grade. Our children deserve the chance to receive a quality education. We need to make the education system in Texas better for all our children.

Though many say that more money is the answer, the problem is not how much money is spent, but how--and where--the money is spent. Today, politicians in Austin and funding formulas decide where our educational dollars are spent. But parents should have the right to choose where their children go to school, and where their educational tax dollars are spent.
