Letter To The Editor [Heraldo-Liberal]

Michelle Hill, a public school teacher, writes in and says she is concerned about the future of education and the teacher-benefit package. Her letter mentions that the 0730 – 1430 work schedule is a farce and she works all summer too, supposedly doing professional development.

With all this alleged professional development, one would think that our public schools would be in better condition and taxpayers wouldn’t be leaving them in droves to seek alternatives and better results elsewhere. This taxpayer who has had to send all three of his children to private schools, to avoid the politically correct institutions of collectivist thinking and government indoctrination called “public education”, wants a refund.

I live next door to a teacher who is always home from her workday before I am, and before my wife, a private school teacher who makes a lot less, gets home. I observe these neighbors have an inordinate number of days off during the school year and an entire summer filled with family vacations and special time with the kids while the rest of us are working to pay for it all. I witness snow days when we have to go to work but our public school teacher family next door gets to go sledding with the kids. I was in Frankfort when, get this, many school districts across the state called off school so the teachers could go to Frankfort and whine for more money – must be nice.

Regarding the benefits cuts for teachers, we in the private sector have been taking cuts for years, welcome to reality. No, I don’t buy Hill’s whining argument for one minute. I witness the truth every day right next door. Maybe Hill needs to move from Madisonville to Fayette County.
