LAWYERS WIN, YOU LOSE...AGAIN
"The millions of horizontally challenged Americans who frequent McDonald's
restaurants will soon have to change their orders. Instead of asking for one 'Supersize'
fries, they'll need to request four regular-sized orders. . . . (W)hile
McDonald's retreat from big won't slim America, it does hand a victory to the
forces of regulation and litigation -- and the mistruths they peddle.
"McDonald's says its move is a matter of menu simplification. But what the
Supersize dump is really about is the mau-mauing that the hamburger chain has
received from the nation's food nannies for selling what increasingly overweight
Americans love to eat. This public shaming has led to a crush of trial lawyers,
who've already started a tobacco-like assault on the food industry. McDonald's
has seemingly thrown in the wrapper and moved to damage control."
- Review & Outlook, Wall Street Journal, 3/8/04
WHAT'S A DAY IN A LIFE?
"Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano Friday vetoed a bill requiring a 24-hour waiting
period for abortions less than a half-hour after it hit her desk. Miss
Napolitano, a Democrat who supports abortion rights, issued the veto Thursday in
spite of more than 2,000 calls, emails and faxes to her office urging her to
sign the legislation and make it law."
- Washington Times, 3/7/04
EDUCATION FAILURE
"In business, poor performance leads to bankruptcy or, at a minimum, a
restructuring of the company. In American education, failure entitles the
bankrupt system to even more taxpayer dollars."
- Columnist Cal Thomas
LET THE MARKET WORK
"The opening of Wal-Mart's first 'supercenter' in California, in the desert city
of La Quinta near Palm Springs, has sparked a debate that is difficult for us to
understand. Many Californians are now arguing about whether the massive
retailer's expansion into the grocery business in California is a good trend or
a bad one. Let the shoppers decide. . . . That's how the market should work.
The customers rule and they will decide if such a concept is a good one."
- Orange County Register, 3/7/04

WHY VOTERS DON'T TRUST ANYTHING POLITICIANS SAY
"Here is what retired Gen. Wesley Clark had to say about (John) Kerry on Feb. 5:
'The American people don't want another Washington insider who never plays it
straight. They don't want a follower who makes decisions by licking his finger
and sticking it up in the wind.'
"This is what Mr. Clark had to say about Mr. Kerry eight days later, after
abandoning his own quest for the presidency: 'I believe John Kerry has the right
experience, the right values and the right leadership and character to beat
George W. Bush.' "
- Associated Press, 3/7/04
SMOKE-EATERS FOR BUSH
"(W)hat about the attack on Bush (over the president's use of 9/11 in campaign
commercials) from the International Association of Fire Fighters? Guess what:
That union just happens to be endorsing Kerry. But the firefighters themselves
back Bush. Hero New York City firefighter Mike Moran, whose words of defiance
against Osama bin Laden helped rally the nation in the aftermath of the 9/11
attacks, said Friday that he finds President Bush's campaign ads invoking the
attacks 'inspirational.' "
- NewsMax.com, 3/8/04
BIG HEAD
"(John Kerry's) the only president that if he gets on Mount Rushmore, the face
will be actual size."
- Tonight Show host Jay Leno
LOOKING FOR #2
"It's easy to overstate the importance of a vice-presidential nominee. . . . But
the veep choice can matter on the margins, which is why I'll make two guesses as
to what John Kerry will do. If he thinks in conventional political terms, the
safe bet is Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri. If he wants to make a bold choice,
he will offer the job to retiring NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw. One prominent
Republican says the idea of Mr. Brokaw on the Democratic ticket 'worries me a
lot.' "
- John Fund on the Trail, 3/8/04

SURVEY SAYS!
Congratulations to Rep. Ron "Dr. No" Paul, Texas Republican, who stomped former
New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani 67% - 33% in our head-to-head 2008 GOP
Presidential Survivor Series championship finale. Seems News & Views readers
have had it with compassionate conservatism and want to see a return to
constitutional conservatism. Thanks to everyone who played along with the
Survivor Series. It was a fun distraction while the donkeys were settling on
their nominee for THIS year.
OK. Back to the present-day. Who do you think John "F-ing" Kerry will tap to
be his running mate?
SC Sen. John Edwards
MO Rep. Dick Gephardt
LA Sen. John Breaux
NM Gov. Bill Richardson
VA Gov. Mark Warner
FL Sen. Bob Graham
Somebody else (including She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named)

SHOW US THE RECORDS
"Considering the unrelenting, weeks-long demands for one candidate's National
Guard attendance records, I too would like to see proof of John Kerry's medals.
As a Vietnam vet myself, his medal count for the brief time he spent in country
seems extremely high, particularly for a junior-grade officer."
- News & Views reader Dave Skocik
"I, too, have been trying for weeks to learn how to access the records
underlying the award of 3 Purple Hearts within a 4 month period to John Kerry.
I am trying to find out if any other service person has ever been awarded 3 PHs
in a 4 month period - in the entire history of our military. Who wrote up the
papers required to be submitted for each PH award? Who signed each of them? Who
approved them? All of these are legitimate questions that require answers. How
can we obtain those answers? And why does it seem so difficult to obtain them?"
- News & Views reader Dan Calabria
GOIN' POSTAL
"A Broadway (North Carolina) mail carrier suspected of stealing mail has been
charged with 91 counts of misdemeanor larceny. Garland Dwayne Avery was first
arrested Aug. 15 last year. A coincidence led deputies to stop his vehicle,
which matched the description of a vehicle used in a recent breaking and
entering. Inside, the deputies found 108 pieces of mail Mr. Avery had failed to
deliver, some of which dated back to April 2003. Sheriff Rollins said he
understood Mr. Avery had been dismissed from the post office, but that union
arbitrators helped get his job back.
"What happened next surprised the sheriff, not to mention those living on Mr.
Avery's route. 'The postal service then had him back on the same route
delivering mail,' said the sheriff. 'We have now charged him with 91 counts of
larceny from these individuals, because they had him right back out there
delivering mail to the same people he'd stole mail from.' Teresa McMillan,
Broadway's postmaster, would not confirm if Mr. Avery was still employed there."
- North Carolina Daily Record, 2/26/04
BLOWING THEIR OPPORTUNITY...AGAIN
"The majority of Americans consistently tell pollsters they prefer lower taxes
and less government spending. More Republicans than Democrats consistently say
they believe in smaller government and lower taxes. Given these statements of
belief, the Republican Party should be the permanent majority party, but it is
not.
"Republicans pride themselves on being better stewards of the public purse and
providing more honest government than their Democrat competitors. In general,
this is true, but Republicans have a tendency to commit political suicide, like
lemmings jumping off a cliff, by taxing and spending like Democrats once they
obtain majority status."
- Richard Rahn of the Cato Institute
