Hot off the press – KKK, Licensing schemes, Tax reform, Education Spending, and Jobs By Theresa Fritz Camoriano
1. KKK and U of L – While it is unfortunate that a racist group like the KKK is depositing leaflets around the University of Louisville campus, the University has only itself to blame. What did it expect when it spent $11,000 to bring in a black supremacist speaker? Most of us don’t need a Ph.D. to figure out that hiring a person to spout racial hatred is not likely to promote racial harmony. 2. Licensing home inspectors – Where did the proposal originate to require home inspectors to be licensed by the government? No doubt it came from the home inspectors themselves. The real purpose of government licensing requirements is never to protect the public. Instead, the real purpose is always to protect the regulated group from competition. It should be a simple matter for consumers to ask their realtors or lenders which inspectors are qualified, and, if there really is a concern about unqualified inspectors, an independent certification organization could certify home inspectors as being qualified, without the need for any government involvement. Consumers then would have the freedom to decide whether they wanted a certified inspector or a non-certified inspector. Alternatively, inspectors could offer an insurance plan that would guarantee the quality of their inspection, and consumers could decide whether to buy that insurance. However, a law requiring certification would harm consumers by limiting their choices and limiting competition. If our elected officials really care about protecting consumers, they will stay out of this one. 3. Kentucky tax reform proposal – The proposals to reduce income taxes and corporate taxes are a great idea. They will reduce some of the impediments to investing in Kentucky and thus should result in business and job growth in the state. Go for it! 4. Education spending – If a restaurant or a car dealer gives you poor service, you can spend your money elsewhere, and the folks who provide poor service may go out of business. However, when the government education establishment continues to show poor results, instead of going out of business, it gets a raise! It is time for us to let our elected officials know we have had enough. We cannot afford to continue wasting children’s time and taxpayers’ money. Our children’s future and the future of our state economy depend upon children getting a high quality education. The only way that will happen is if taxpayers and parents get control over education tax dollars, so they can direct how their money is spent. Let’s do it now. 5. Where did the lost jobs go? We keep hearing that the U.S. has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs during President Bush’s term in office. But is it possible that the economy has changed so much that the job counters just don’t know where to look? With the advent of the Internet, it is now possible for more people to be free-lancers and independent contractors. Those people are still working and earning money, but they are not listed as jobs.
