OH, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD
"Everyone knows that in a chess game white moves first. This abstractly implies
that white has a distinct advantage over black because black has to always take
a defensive stand. Some see this as a continuing form of racism and want to
change the rules of the game. Bill Ware, a devoted chess player, is one of these
people and has come up with a new form of chess. 'By saying that white
automatically is offensive, it states that white is better than black,' Ware
said."
- The Southern Digest, 3/4/04
RESTORING THE FIRST
"On February 11, 2004, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, along with several other
members of The Liberty Caucus, introduced the 'First Amendment Restoration Act'
(H.R. 3801). This legislation would restore Americans' First Amendment rights by
repealing sections of the McCain-Feingold law that forbid issue-advocacy groups
(from informing) their members about important issues and votes relative to
incumbent candidates during the 30 and 60 days before primary and general
elections. . . . The Liberty Committee strongly supports H.R. 3801 and
encourages you to speak in favor of this critical legislation -- while you still
can."
- The Liberty Committee, 3/3/04
THE ICE QUEEN'S ENDORSEMENT
"Boy, that junior senator from New York is a real risk-taker, isn't she?
Yesterday, the Associated Press reports, (Hillary Clinton) issued a presidential
endorsement: 'This is going to be a year, I believe, for Senator Kerry who will
be our nominee and I will do everything I can to get him elected. So I hope that
next year we will have a Democrat in the White House,' she told Japan's Nippon
Television Network Corporation. Not only does she withhold her endorsement
until the contest was over, but she decides to tell the Japanese."
- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/3/04
THE NEW KING OF PANDER-BEARS
"Boy, wait until you see the fire in my belly. President Clinton was often known
as the first black president. I wouldn't be upset if I could earn the right to
be the second."
- John Kerry
RULER OF THE WORLD
"I present to you the lead paragraph in an article which appears in today's
edition of The Independent from London: 'If the human race as a whole, rather
than 50 states plus the District of Colombia, could cast a ballot this coming
November, John Kerry would surely win the presidency by a landslide.' Now ...
just why is this? . . . It's just this simple: These people would vote for Kerry
because he would weaken us and empower them."
- Talk-show host Neal Boortz
DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT
"Here's an interesting promise from a John Kerry position paper titled 'A New
Army of Patriots: John Kerry's Plan to Enlist Citizens in the Cause of a Safer,
Stronger, and More Secure America.' 'In a Kerry Administration, no university
that receives federal aid will be allowed to ban the ROTC from their campus,
except for religious reasons.'
"This is actually already the law of the land, thanks to the Solomon Amendment,
which the House added to a 1996 defense spending bill. Kerry voted against final
passage of the bill, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year
1996, but we can't find any record of his taking a position on the ROTC issue at
the time. It's possible that his 'no' vote simply reflected a general aversion
to spending money on defense."
- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/4/04
PUT ON YOUR BOOTS
"This will be the dirtiest, filthiest presidential campaign in modern American
history. . . . Kerry knows he'll be given a pass by the media and his party
faithful for anything he says and does on the road to defeating Bush, who has
become the news media's least popular chief executive since Nixon."
- Larry Sabato, " Political Crystal Ball," 3/3/04
BOOM, BOOM...OUT GO McAWFUL'S LIGHTS
"The ouster of Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe is high on the agenda of the
party's presumptive U.S. presidential nominee, it was reported. 'One of the
first things Sen. John Kerry will do now that he has won de facto control of the
party is to oust' McAuliffe, the New York Post reported Thursday. The Post
quoted an unnamed top Democrat saying the Kerry team dislikes McAuliffe and
wants 'their own man in charge of the party, someone they can trust.' "
- UPI, 3/4/04
WINTER SOLDIER
There is a TON of information out there in cyber-space about John Kerry's
Vietnam war experience and subsequent buddy-buddy activities with Jane Fonda &
Company, but one particular website is really pulling all the various
information together in one place. Check out

TERRORIST ORGANIZATION?
"Education is not the goal of the NEA (National Education Association) - it is
indoctrination, and the NEA will take whatever steps needed to accomplish their
goal, including intimidation of teachers, parents and taxpayers who disagree
with their agenda and world view. What does that make them? I think Secretary
Paige knows."
- Columnist Barnnon Howse referring to Secretary of Education Rodney Paige's
characterization of the NEA as a "terrorist organization"
STUPIDITY VIRUS STRIKES ANOTHER SKOOL
"Officials at Indianapolis's Lincoln Middle School expelled 12-year-old Jacob
Finklea for a year for bringing a 'weapon' to school--a pair of fabric scissors,
which he planned to use in a sewing class, WRTV reports: 'I put them on the desk
because [the teacher] said, 'Get all your supplies ready to make the pillows,'
and I put the scissors on the desk and she just freaked out,' Jacob said.'
Jacob's mother, Chrystal Finkela, 'said she has contacted several schools to see
if they'll teach her son' during the year he's banished from Lincoln, 'but the
word 'weapon' on his record has deterred many schools from even meeting with
her.' "
- Best of the Web, 3/4/04
SMOKE 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM
The National Post reports that a Canadian man who was convicted of aggravated
assault for shooting at two men trying to repossess his snowmobile has requested
a LONGER sentence than that handed down. 73-year-old Angelo Foti was sentenced
to 20 months in a provincial prison, but requested a 24-month sentence in a
federal prison. Why? Because the provincial prison bans smoking by inmates and
Foti smokes more than a pack a day.
Maybe Mr. Foti should consider a compromise: Switching to smokeless tobacco.
That way he could have his nicotine...and get out sooner, too.
WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO HIDE?
If importing drugs from Canada and elsewhere around the world is such a good
idea, why did five senators (Dorgan, McCain, Daschle, Snowe and Stabenow) try to
SNEAK legislation allowing it into the hopper last week? Bob Cusack of The Hill
reports that, contrary to standard operating procedure for politicians, they
opted to introduce the measure without holding a press conference or, for that
matter, even issuing a press release. Their silence says a lot about the merits
of this idea.
FINDING FISCAL RELIGION
"House Republicans will propose a fiscal 2005 budget less than what President
Bush wants by freezing spending unrelated to defense and security, and providing
less of an increase for defense and homeland security, the top Republican on the
House Budget Committee said yesterday. . . . Spurred on by House Republicans
bent on tightening spending, (Chairman) Nussle's 2005 budget resolution - which
is expected to come before his committee one week from today - will institute
mechanisms to hold down spending, including a one-year ban on lawmaker-specified
earmarks, or 'pork,' in spending bills."
- Washington Times, 3/3/04
OF POUTS AND HISSY FITS
"Democrats do not say outright that they are now blocking all GOP judicial
nominees in the Senate Judiciary Committee. But Chairman Orrin Hatch says they
are - after they vanished late last week and took a voting quorum with them.. .
. The disappearing Tuesday came after Democrats complained for two hours about 'hackergate'
- GOP aides raiding Democratic computer files - and about President Bush using
'recess appointments' to temporarily put on the bench two controversial nominees
who had been blocked for a year by Democratic maneuvering."
- Lee Davidson, Deseret Morning News, 3/2/04
BOMBSHELL MEMOS
"I may go to my grave with it because it would so damage the trust of the
American people in their judicial system. I wouldn't reveal it, no matter what
the partisan advantage."
- Former Judiciary Committee staffer Manny Miranda on the content of Democrat
memos he read which show "cash for judges" schemes and other shenanigans
ESCAPE HATCH ON MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
"In a sign that the constitutional (marriage) amendment endorsed by President
Bush may be running into trouble on Capitol Hill, the Judiciary Committee's
chairman, Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), is preparing to introduce wording that would
leave the definition of marriage up to the states. . . . 'A number of us think
Senator Hatch's approach is the most promising on strategic, legal and political
grounds,' said Michael Horowitz, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. 'He is
focusing on a target that is capable of generating broad, across-the-board
support.' "
- Washington Post, 3/4/04
