You mean Ross was
right?
by J.V. Mitchell
In 1992, Ross Perot caught the attention of a large part of the voters with
his analysis of the growing debt problem. Suddenly, pols who had never paid any
attention to government spending became very aware of the nation's budget
deficit.
As his campaign gathered speed, much of the "main stream press" began to
ridicule him. Now, however, CNN has taken up the cry about Perot's "giant
sucking sound" as the jobs , factories, whole industries flee to offshore
locations, succumbing to the lure of coolie wages and lack of government
pollution controls.
Anchor man Lou Dobbs spends as much as half of some of his nightly program time
discussing the latest events of fleeing jobs. He conducts interviews with
persons on both sides of the question of "free" trade. It is amazing to me, some
of the far out explanations given by the "pro" free traders. Generally they take
the position that in the long run, the loss of jobs will be good for us. How
some of these airheads got jobs with our government is a mystery to me. Dobbs
doesn't hesitate to call their hand on such blather. He doesn't ask any
"softball" questions, but cuts right to the heart of the problem; how to explain
to the jobless workers that they are better off.
This program has been needed since about a month after President Clinton signed
the NAFTA agreement. I feel that Lou is sincere in his quest. Only one problem
in my view is that he mentions, nearly every broadcast, that three million jobs
have been sent offshore since President Bush was elected. So far he hasn't told
his audience how many jobs were exported between the time Clinton signed on to
NAFTA and the election of Bush. Although I'm not a Bush supporter, fair is fair
and his continuing mention of the job loss in the current administration will be
a negative for Prez Bush's reelection campaign.
Never the less, I encourage all to catch Dobbs' 5 P.M. broadcast.
