Has The Morality Pendulum Swung To Its Limit? – Janet Jackson Ruckus, Mel Gibson Movie, Gov’t Spending

By Theresa Fritz Camoriano

The big fuss that occurred due to Janet Jackson’s performance at the halftime of the Superbowl suggests that Americans may finally have had enough.  We are very tolerant people, but most of us don’t think our families should be exposed to bared breasts and simulated sex on stage at the halftime of a football game.  When regular folks finally flex their wallets and refuse to buy products from the people who sponsor this stuff, then we will begin to see a real change.  I hope we will be able to look back on the Janet Jackson incident as the point where the pendulum began to swing back, and ordinary Americans began to demand moral decency – not by making indecency illegal but by refusing to support indecency with their own money.  We should note that any change that occurs will come not from government punishments and fines but from consumers making their preferences heard at the cash register.

Another place where the cash register may reflect a demand for decency will be at the box office for Mel Gibson’s new movie, The Passion of the Christ, which opens this Wednesday (Ash Wednesday).  As Americans purchase tickets to see that movie, they also will be speaking with their wallets to encourage respect for religious beliefs and for morality.  If we see Mel Gibson making lots of money by promoting Christianity and morality, even those “progressives” in Hollywood may “get religion”!

Who knows?  If morality becomes “cool”, moral people may even demand that the government stop stealing from one person to give to another!
