KERRY’S WAR “INJURIES”
“The same (Vietnam War) record Mr. Kerry wields as evidence of his leadership
abilities is also used by his harshest critics, who question the severity of the
injuries he used to get sent home early and the five medals he garnered in five
months. ‘If I got three Purple Hearts for three scratches, I'd be embarrassed,’
said Ted Sampley, who fought in Vietnam and publishes U.S. Veteran Dispatch. He
remembers soldiers turning away awards for minor injuries.”
- Washington Times, 2/20/04
SEND IN THE FRENCH
“Haitian thugs actually have a pretty good record against superpowers. Bill
Clinton dispatched a warship to Port-au-Prince and angry Haitians met it at the
dock, where Mr. Clinton lost his nerve and withdrew his ship under a hail of
beer cans. Mr. Aristide was subsequently ousted in a coup and 20,000 U.S. troops
were finally dispatched to restore him to a position to plunder. The French
would probably need luck as well as pluck to put down the evildoers, all 50, or
maybe even 55, of them.”
- Wesley Pruden, “Pruden On Politics,” 2/20/04
THE WIMPS OF WAR
“The reason conservatives are upset with Republicans currently and normally is
that they give the appearance of not knowing that this is a war and not a garden
party."
- Manny Miranda, former Judiciary Committee staffer who was forced to resign by
GOP leaders for reading Democrat memos showing public corruption and collusion
with left-wing special interests, CNS News, 2/20/04
SIMPLE CONCEPT
“Amnesty rewards those who broke our laws, and thus encourages others to do the
same. Our immigration policies should do the opposite — discourage lawbreakers
by sending the message that illegal entry into the United States will not be
rewarded."
- Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), Washington Times, 2/20/04
WHO DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING?
The Washington Times reported on Friday that the Border Patrol says the number
of illegal aliens trying to cross the border jumped dramatically immediately
after President Bush floated his amnesty proposal. Go figure.
BIRDIES VS. BORDER SECURITY
The Times also reported on Friday that a 14-mile long stretch of fencing along
the California/Mexico border designed to “safeguard defense facilities from
terrorists and ebb the flow of illegal aliens” is being stopped by the
California Coastal Commission because the project might disturb the habitats for
three allegedly endangered bird species.
KEEP THE PORK FLOWING
“Expect President Bush to sign the transportation authorization bill that
Congress will pass later this year despite a recent threat to veto the
legislation. The White House threatened to veto the $318 billion version of the
transportation bill that the Senate passed earlier this month. . . . .
Nevertheless, the president will ignore the veto threat and sign the bill
because it is estimated to generate 1.6 million new jobs, something that the
president needs to stem Democratic attacks on national unemployment figures.”
- The Hill, 2/19/04
A PRESCRIPTION TO MAKE YOU SICK
“Consider the brand-new Medicare drug benefit. Citizens can debate the merits of
the biggest entitlement since 1965. However, every American should deplore the
shifty way it was enacted and the shady deals now benefiting powerful people
associated with this law.
“...Taxpayers are stuck with a program that costs 35 percent more than when
their bamboozled representatives approved it last November. Top officials win
golden parachutes stitched together by interests they have legislated and
regulated. Trampled House voting practices, a federally-funded TV deal for GOP
political consultants and a bribery probe all frost this ugly cake. This is why
movement conservatives are so grumpy. They are sick of knocking themselves out
to promote limited government and fiscal prudence, only to watch their solemn
beliefs burn to a crisp in the increasingly Third World crucible called
Republican-controlled Washington.”

THE LORD WILL RATE YOU ON YOUR VOTE?
“We must never tell people how to vote, but we should tell them the Lord wants
to talk to them about how they're going to vote, and the Lord is going to talk
to them someday about how they voted."
- Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention
SPEAK FOR YOURSELF
“Make no mistake,” writes Linda Chavez in her column this week, “same-sex
marriage will fundamentally alter the institution itself, rendering it virtually
meaningless.”
Now, this is just sad. I like Linda and generally enjoy reading her column, but
this contention is simply absurd on its face. Over 2,000 gays got “married” in
San Francisco last weekend. Now...how many of you married folks around the rest
of the country suddenly find your own marriages “meaningless” because of it?
Those of you who raised your hands need to get yourselves to a marriage
counselor...quick! You’ve got bigger problems in your marriage than gays tying
the knot.
REMEMBERING WHAT’S TRULY IMPORTANT
“Evangelical Christians will simply stay home and not vote this November if Bush
doesn't take strong action against homosexual marriages (according to the
Washington Times on Friday). Islamic terrorists couldn't be more thrilled. You
know things are going your way when you can get evangelical Christians to do
your work for you.
“...I realize that most people do not understand the concept of federalism, nor
do they understand just how our local and federal governments were originally
supposed to interact with one another. OK ... here's a quick lesson. These are
State marriage licenses. They're not federal marriage licenses. Arnold
Schwarzenegger is the governor of California ... not George Bush. It's state
law that's being flouted in California, not federal law. President Bush has
enough on his plate without getting involved in local and state matters.”
- Talk-show host Neal Boortz
MOORE TROUBLE FOR BUSH
“Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) -- the ‘Ten Commandments Judge’ -- is
starting to act more and more like a third party Presidential candidate. For a
guy who isn't running for President ‘right now’ (to quote his spokesperson),
he's sure starting to act like a candidate. Moore is speaking at Constitution
Party events in Oregon and Montana this month, according to the party's website.
With President Bush currently trailing both Kerry and Edwards for re-election by
double-digits -- according to the latest CNN poll -- that last thing he wants in
November is a ‘Ralph Nader of the Right’ draining Christian conservative votes
from his essential base.”
- Ron Gunzburger, Politics1, 2/20/04
HOME SCHOOLING FOR DUMMIES
Virginia bans high school graduates from home-schooling their own children.
State law requires parents who wish to home-school to have at least a bachelor’s
degree. Legislation which would have removed this ridiculous ban died in
committee this week on a tie vote.
Virginia’s secretary of education, Belle Wheelan was thrilled with the defeat,
noting that her own son barely graduated from high school and saying, “I
wouldn’t want him teaching any grandchildren I have. He’s not qualified.”
What unmitigated chutzpah. Wheelan says her kid is too stupid to teach his own
kids...but where did HE get HIS education? Public schools. Duh. And just because
HER public school-educated kid is a dumb-ass doesn’t mean all high school
graduates are dolts who can’t teach their own kids that one plus one equals two.
And I have to tell you, I’ve met a LOT of public school teachers with degrees
coming out their wazoos who I wouldn’t let within a country mile of MY kid’s
education. Legislators in the home of home-schooled Thomas Jefferson should hang
their heads in shame for allowing this bill to die.
