By Theresa Fritz Camoriano Kentucky’s new Republican governor, Ernie Fletcher, made the campaign promise that he would not increase taxes. He promised that any change in the tax code would be “revenue neutral”. Now, he has released his tax reform proposal, and it includes a 6% sales tax on services, which would be added to the 7.5% income tax we service providers are already paying (6% to the state and 1.5% to the metro government). As a patent attorney, I am one of the service providers who would be affected by this new tax. Governor Fletcher’s “revenue neutral” plan would triple my state income taxes! By George Baumler When a taxpayer pays a tax-preparation company to figure his/her taxes, the taxpayer has a reasonable expectation that any overpayment is due the taxpayer in the form of a tax refund. Almost no one would believe the tax-preparer or the IRS should be entitled to the refund, since it is an overpayment of tax in the first place. Let's examine the VET program and what it does to clean the air in a similar frame of mind. I thought of not writing this little jewel because politicians may discover it and further justify their actions. But then I realized that politicians seldom listen to us and don’t really care too much about the constitution anyway. I heard that lying is a 1st amendment right. I had to mull this over for awhile and then I had to agree. (click to read more) CHARLES TRUXILLO TRUCKS FOR AZTLAN By Michael A. Minton Maybe it’s me, but some things in this world just don’t make sense. Actually, it’s more like things in this country don’t make sense. I can understand why things around the world don’t make sense, I don’t live there, and it’s not part of my culture. But, I HAVE lived here for thirty-something years now, and I still can’t understand why we are so lazy when it comes to finding out information. (click to read more)

Everything that's fun in life is dangerous. Horse races, for instance, are very dangerous. But attempt to design a safe horse and the result is a cow (an appalling animal to watch at the trotters.) And everything that isn't fun is dangerous too. It is impossible to be alive and safe.” -- P.J. O'Rourke |
