KYRepublicans.com: Official Response to Governor Carroll's Letter to
the State Journal

(KYRepublicans.com Editor’s Note)
In the January 23rd Edition of the Franklin County newspaper “The State Journal”
a story was printed titled “Former Governor Julian Carroll urges Governor
Fletcher to rein in young GOP campaigners”. His comments were in regards to a
commentary written by KYRepublicans.com Guest Commentator Frank Friday of
Louisville. In his letter, former Governor Carroll demanded an apology from
Governor Fletcher and the Kentucky Young Republicans.
On this subject, I would like to make the following comments in response to
Governor Carroll, which will be followed by the official response from Mr.
Friday.
First, I would like to apologize to the Kentucky Young Republicans Federation,
which is a separate, but well respected organization that is not affiliated with
KYRepublicans.com other than a mutual friendship and cooperation to further
ideas of the Republican Party. Governor Carroll should do his research more
thoroughly before making inaccurate accusations against individuals that were
not involved.
Second, Frank Friday has been one of the most well-respected and dedicated
commentators to KYRepublicans.com since coming on board in May of 2001. He is a
master of political satire and humor, and his articles are read each week by
activists in both the Democrat and Republican parties. We are proud to recognize
him as a regular contributor to KYRepublicans.com.
Also, it is obvious to even the most casual observer that Mr. Friday does not
speak for Governor Fletcher, and his works should not be interpreted than
anything other than his own opinion.
Lastly, KYRepublicans.com recognizes Governor Carroll’s
efforts as nothing more than a simplistic a ploy to draw Governor Fletcher into
his brother's race for the State Senate so that Governor Carroll can somehow
manipulate the situation to work in his favor. However, be warned Governor
Carroll you are not the first Democrat candidate to quote Frank Friday in a
press release. Who was that Democrat you may ask? None other than Ben Chandler
in his 2003 race for Governor, and well we know how that race ended. Governor
Carroll should realize that this time, "That same tired old dog aint' going to
hunt."
Please enjoy Frank Friday’s response and to read the article that started it
all, as well as, articles from other KYRepublicans.com commentators. Click on

CARROLL COMES UNGLUED
by Frank Friday
I thought the 2004 elections would be entertaining, but former Gov. Carroll has
gone me one better and brought the circus right to my front door. A few weeks
ago in my semi-regular column for the Republican activist website
KYRepublicans.com, I made a wisecrack about what I took to be his rather
unlikely prospects for election to the State Senate this year.
Apparently, that's all that was needed to set the guy off in a blistering rage,
complaining to the present Governor as well as the Frankfort State Journal about
Republican "mudslinging". I guess what got his goat was the sudden realization
that he is perhaps not the universally beloved elder statesman of the Bluegrass
he supposed he was.
Gov. Carroll has been out of politics since the rotary-dial telephone era and a
lot has changed. If he thinks his biggest problem is a web commentator in
Louisville making the infrequent sarcastic remark he is even less prepared for a
21st Century election than I originally thought.
Now, I have no connection or special insight into the Fletcher campaign. But I
can only imagine it will be well run, well funded, and, at the appropriate time,
able to comment on Gov. Carroll's controversial administration. Anyway, for the
first time ever, Gov. Carroll is going to face a strong Republican challenge and
that can't make him too happy.
Kentucky has come a long way since the 1970s. Post
BOPTROT, the voters of our state are much more serious about the sort of people
they elect. The Republicans and Democrats in Frankfort today are not perfect,
but as a whole they represent a vast improvement from the past. Whether Gov.
Carroll can convince his constituents to return him to office in this new age of
ethical scrutiny should be a revelatory process. My own opinion is, that like
most '70s relics- the Pet Rock, the Mood Ring, etc.- Gov. Carroll's public
career is probably best left stored away, tucked in behind the polyester leisure
suits.
But, as he's determined to have his Last Hurrah, I can only suggest he lighten
up a bit and enjoy the experience.
It' s a long way until November.
