Dominic
Brueggemann’s Comments To Northern Kentucky Legislative Caucus
The following comments were
made to 13 members of Northern Kentucky's Legislative Caucus at the Northern
Kentucky University Forum held on Saturday morning January 10, 2004
Thanks for this opportunity
today to speak to you all. My name is Dominic Brueggemann and I am from Walton,
KY.
It was in 1798 that
Thomas Jefferson wrote" "Today is the day that men work sadly in their fields.
And women weep softly in their kitchens. For the Legislature is in Session and
no man's property is safe!"
Fortunately for the
Commonwealth of Kentucky, we have many good state legislators, especially in
Northern Kentucky, and the words of Jefferson will NOT come true.
But to ensure our
liberty, we must be vigilant. That's why we want all legislators to understand
that the only legitimate role of government is to protect the rights of its
citizens.
These rights are Life,
Liberty, and Property. Whenever the government goes beyond merely protecting
these rights, it begins to infringe upon them.
We are wary of a
government that promises to do things for the people. New programs mean new
taxes. And new taxes mean that the government is spending more of our money on
things that we may not want.
When we
spend our money, we have freedom and choice. When the government spends our
money, that freedom is denied.
For instance, any sort of
welfare program removes my freedom to give my money to charities of my choice.
The free market would
work solutions to the needs of society, and services would develop naturally and
MORE EFFICIENTLY on the private market that they ever had when run by a
government bureaucracy.
Increased freedom makes
for a better society and we should NOT look to government to meet our needs.
We encourage our
legislators to promote liberty, and we remind everyone that George Washington
said: "Government is not eloquence, it is NOT reason. It is down right force.
Like fire, government is a dangerous servant and a Fearful Master."
Please help us by
trimming down the size, cost, reach and power of BIG STATE GOVERNMENT. Many
thanks.
