Smoking and Responsibility

Terry Gray

I can only hope that you folks who support smoking bans have not considered a few things.  If you have considered them then we are more lost than I believed possible.

Have you considered that, every time you raise your hand in support of smoking bans, you essentially agree with Smoke Free Louisville that you are not capable of making your own decisions?  You also are agreeing with them that you cannot make responsible decisions regarding the welfare of your children.  You are telling them that you need them to protect your path against things that may harm you, because you don’t have sense enough to do it yourself.

Have you considered that, when you let them clear this trail for you, you are giving them permission to clear all the trails?  You might want to reconsider the consequences of putting your welfare and the welfare of your family in the hands of these people.  The leaders of Smoke Free Louisville and groups like them are people with no more wisdom than you.  In fact, many of you have a lot more on the ball than the leaders of these groups.  How do you feel about someone who knows less than you making decisions for you?

Smoking isn’t the only battle that they have their sights on.  When you hand them the reins by agreeing with them on smoking bans, you are allowing them to come after something of yours later.  Once they gain momentum, there is no stopping them.

I ask you to think about what you are doing.  Don’t accept everything that Smoke Free Louisville tells you.  You are smarter than that.  You may want to consider other sources of information and make intelligent, educated decisions for yourself and your family.

"You may think smoking is a nasty habit and secondhand smoke is unpleasant. But what's truly obnoxious is the drive to make us all healthier people through the coercive arm of the law." - Gene Healy of the Cato Institute
