I have been addicted to pain killers. I had a motorcycle accident which broke a few ribs and my collarbone a couple of years ago. I was on percocet and oxcycontin afterward, as there is nothing a doctor can do for a broken collarbone or broken ribs, you must wait for them to heal, and indeed the painkillers were needed. I am sure you know about this type of thing.

I believe in using technology and in this case I used the technology of painkillers to allow myself to function in my life. I also enjoyed the feeling they gave me, but knew that I must kick the habit after I healed. I delayed my "kicking" of the habit for a while because I enjoyed them immensely. I, unlike yourself, was able to kick the addiction on my own. I did the same thing with alcohol years earlier.

I have no problem with you and what happened to you with regard to your use or abuse of painkillers. I know many old broken Vets that use them on an ongoing basis under the encouragement of the VA. What is interesting is that many people self-medicate daily with alcohol and society condones it, but your self-medication is so persecuted. Ironic at best! You are a very strong man for standing tall with all the negative attacks, which we knew would come your way from the left. You set a wonderful example for others that may be in the same situation you WERE in right now. You, maybe unbeknownst to you, are helping many others to kick the habit by the example you set and your positive attitude towards the whole episode.
