Mayor Abramson
Says Metro
Louisville
A Success
By Theresa Fritz
Camoriano
On Nov. 12,
Louisville’s
Mayor Abramson spoke to the Lyndon Business Association at a luncheon in the UPS
building conference room, describing his experience after almost a year at the
helm of the new metro government. He said that, while other cities around the
country are experiencing large financial shortfalls, the merger of the city of
Louisville
and Jefferson County enabled metro Louisville to make up a $19 million
shortfall, largely by eliminating 700 positions in which there had been a
duplication of efforts by the city and county. Abramson described various
difficulties he had encountered with the merger but thought that it was working
out well.
Abramson has been
visiting cities such as New York and Chicago, speaking to groups of young ex-Louisvillians
and encouraging them to move back home. He said there are job opportunities
here, the cost of living is reasonable, the lifestyle is great, and many
talented, well-educated young people have indicated that they want to come back
home. Also, many other cities are looking at
Louisville’s
example and considering whether they should undertake a similar type of merger.
He said the spotlight is on us, we are attracting attention and are all the buzz
around the country, and now all we have to do is succeed.
