A Few Thoughts

By Theresa Fritz Camoriano

1.       Voting –

We have an election on Tuesday.  Some people believe it is their civic duty to vote.  Others are so disgusted with the process and the candidates that they refuse to vote.  I think the people who take enough time to become educated about the issues and the candidates should vote.  Those who vote based on their emotional reaction to the latest television commercial would do us all a favor if they would stay home

2.       Illegal immigrants

Why is the INS picking on WalMart?  Illegal immigrants are working everywhere in this country, so why does the government set up a sting operation against WalMart? Consumers obviously like WalMart, voting in favor of it with their wallets, but there is a lot of political hay to be made by bashing a large, successful business.  This selective enforcement of the law simply gives bureaucrats a way to play politics, attack their enemies, and protect their friends.  That is not supposed to be the way we do things in this country.

There is no question that we have a serious problem with illegal immigration in the U.S., but the solution is not to attack a single employer or a token few illegal immigrants.  Our national security and basic fairness demand that we stop winking at widespread evasion of our immigration laws, stop creating amnesties that simply invite more law breaking, and establish a realistic policy to deal with the problem of illegal immigration.  We need to establish a guest worker system, which would recognize the reality that many American businesses would collapse without these foreign workers, and which would restore a mechanism for controlling who is allowed to enter our country and how long they are allowed to stay here.

3.       The big lie

The Soviets, like Lenin and Stalin, believed in using the “big lie” to sway the masses of people.  They found that a big lie, repeated often enough, came to be believed by most people.  Unfortunately, the same phenomenon is operating in our own country today.  It is sad that people are so unscrupulous as to be willing to use lies to get their way and sad that so many of us are so gullible as to believe those lies. Even many so-called “scientists”, who are supposed to seek the unbiased truth, are corrupted by government grants and end up spouting propaganda.  Most of us, having been indoctrinated in the government schools, have lost the ability to question or to make our own assessment of a situation.  If the person making the statement is “one of them”, the masses simply believe everything that person says, and, if the person is “one of the other guys”, the masses don’t believe anything he says.  We need to encourage children and adults alike to seek the truth for themselves, from whatever source it comes, and to question all authority, even those who are supposedly the “good guys”.    And those who make use of the “big lie” should be exposed with lots of bright light.
