TERRY’S TIDBITS

By Terry Gray

OBESITY

I was watching a show on television called, “The Big Hurt,” concerning over-weight people in America.  This subject is important to us all, because, according to many of the propagandized studies that have the kind of funding for mass release, we will all soon be FAT!

Anyway, it was an hour show, which really means about 5 minutes of information on FAT foods because of introductions, repetition, and commercials.  About 3 minutes into the show, they cut away for ads, and right in my face was a Burger King spot.  It showed a juicy double-cheeseburger, a huge order of fries and a large soda.

After the assorted other commercials for diarrhea, indigestion, irritable bowel movement, and the ever popular, “Hurry on down and save $6,000 on a new car right now” the show on FAT continued.

I’m still confused.

SURE IS QUIET

Mike Kuntz of Smoke Free Louisville fame sure is being awfully quiet after Brown and Williamson decided to pull out of Louisville and take with it millions of dollars in donations, hundreds of jobs, and millions of dollars in taxes.  He might want to be quiet from 3 states over and take his henchmen with him.  We’ll keep a light on.

SPEAKING OF SMOKING

(some snippets from letters I have been receiving from around the country)

Ø     “Last night for the 6th time in 2 months the health department dropped in.  Not only had they been in the night before - they have never, not even once, observed smoking, ashtrays or the like.  Each time they rattle the bartenders, distract them, and preoccupy them with the pulling out of various forms, "the personalized smoking policy", and the search for violations.
Needless to say, the added stress of the DOH combined with decreased sales - unplanned closures (blackouts and terrorist attacks), the smoking ban and the economy make it difficult to maintain a positive business/civic attitude/cash flow.”

Ø     “Syracuse now has young girls visiting bars in the evening.  I think they were in my place last night. Entered very quickly and headed straight to the ladies room, then came to the bar, we asked for ID and they asked for directions. One kept looking at the containers of tobacco free cigarette we have set out on the bar.  Twenty minutes later another owner close by called and said two young girls walked in his place, someone was smoking and they yelled BUSTED and flashed some kind of badges.  I guess these girls got snotty with some of his customers.  He was more angry at their attitude than at being caught in violation.  This is his third so he will probably get a lettering of his hearing as did another local with his third.”

Ø     "FDNY Tobacco Cessation Program Shows 40 Percent Quit Rate at 6 Months"

‘Welllll....  40% quit rate is still PRETTY impressive, though not quite what the main headline indicates.    Hmmm... maybe we should read a bit more though....’

“…approximately 1,500 of 11,000 FDNY firefighters were cigarette smokers, ...  214 of the FDNY cigarette smokers enrolled in the 12-week program. ... 39 percent were tobacco free at 6-months.”

‘Hmm... so it's actually 40% (well, 39%, but who's counting?) of the

214/1,500 or actually 86 firefighters who are now "tobacco free."

1500 smoking Firefighters altogether at the start, so this "Tobacco Free" program has resulted in a 6% quit rate.   The overall smoking rate in the 11,000 person NYFD has gone from 13.6% down to 12.9%

Amazing how the entire NYFD and EMS services going Smoke-Free translates into a drop of seven tenths of one percent once the actual FACTS are looked at.

Can anyone spell P-R-O-P-A-G-A-N-D-A?’

Sheeesh.

Ø     Two days ago I was doing a videotape interview with a
smoker who happens to be a 24 year old, unmarried,
mother of six children.  She told me that one of her friends
was recently hired by NBC (the television network)
to do nothing but visit bars and report the ones in which
people were smoking cigarettes.

This makes me wonder just how many people have been
hired recently by TV news organizations to be full-time,
professional "snitches"?

I suggest to bar owners to get a camera with a flash and
take a picture of each person who complains about smoking.
You have the right to do this in your own establishment.
You don't necessarily have to pass the picture(s) around to
other bar owners so that they can see trouble coming as
it arrives.

Ø     A new ploy to puff on

“New 'reduced harm' cigarettes are being marketed in the Buffalo area, and health experts worry they could lead more people to start smoking.”

Can anyone believe that this is America?  These are only a few of the letters that I receive daily.  These are actual people being harassed and lied to by actual Americans.

Here’s a link to a great book on the issue of smoking and smoking bans. Dissecting Antismokers' Brains.

KIND OF ABOUT SMOKING

Did our illustrious Mayor Jerry lie to us about V.E.T.?  It would seem so when it was reported that he and Art Williams said that they had worked with the state to develop a plan to bring Jefferson County into compliance without the V.E.T.  “Worked with the state…?”  During a televised sound bite, a state official said that all the state did was pass along the proposal to the EPA.  Oh Jerry, how could you?  I would expect that kind of garbage from Art Williams, scoundrel extraordinaire, but not from our “Mayor for Life.”  I guess you won’t take any credit for the piece of news that B&W are leaving either?  You did start this whole smoking ban thing, so why don’t you stand up and take the credit?  You deserve it, Jerry; take a bow.  We know you aren’t modest.
