"I am sure there was no man born marked of God above another, for none comes into the world with a saddle upon his back, neither any booted and spurred to ride him." -- Richard Rumbold (before being hanged 1679)

Smoking Ban Proponents Getting “Rights” All Wrong        By Theresa Fritz Camoriano        As I listened to the testimony of people on the proposed smoking ban in Louisville, I realized that most of them are completely unaware of the ideas that are the foundation of our legal system.  One of the speakers complained that she lost money, because she was a singer and could not sing in smoke-filled rooms due to her health.  She seemed to think that she had the right to a profitable job in a smoke-free bar.  Another complained that her granddaughter enjoyed bowling but stopped, because her family did not think the smoke-filled bowling alley air was healthy for her.  She thought her granddaughter should have the right to go bowling in a smoke-free establishment.          (Click to Read More)

Smoking Bans and Private Property Rights        By Donna Mancini        I have attended all four health dept hearings as well as the two metro council hearings. I have listened by the hours to testimony of the proponents of the smoke free Louisville ordinance.  (Click to Read More)

French Fried by the Welfare State        By Lawrence W. Reed        (How is it possible for a heat wave to wipe out 15,000 people in a modern nation--a nation that takes great pride in having fashioned one of the world's most extensive welfare "safety nets"? )  (Click to Read More)

URBAN MOBILITY REPORT LEADS TO ERRONEOUS TRANSIT PROPAGANDA        By Randall O’Toole        Publication by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) of its 2003 urban mobility report today has led the transit lobby to make false claims about the role transit can play in relieving urban congestion.  The American Public Transportation Association claims that the report  says that "more public transportation is needed to relieve traffic congestion" (http://tinyurl.com/p9hl). In fact, the report says no such thing.          (Click to Read More)

Novak:  For the Record         "I had thought I never again would write about retired diplomat Joseph Wilson's CIA-employee wife, but feel constrained to do so now that repercussions of my July 14 column have reached the front pages of major newspapers and led off network news broadcasts. My role and the role of the Bush White House have been distorted and need explanation.          (Click to Read More)

“Many Europeans see us as heartless and uncaring because we don't expect Uncle Sam to coddle us from cradle to grave. But because we still largely take care of ourselves and of those around us, we don't drop dead by the tens of thousands when the temperature goes up.” --Lawrence Reed

"The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of
better men than himself."

- John Stuart Mill, 19th century British philosopher
