TERRY’S TINY TIDBITS

CORRECTION

In last week’s TERRY’S TIDBITS under POISON CONTROL I used the word affective instead of effective.  Sorry, I hope this obvious blunder isn’t bugging everyone else as much as it is me.

CRIMINAL CHARGES

I don’t think cops should be the ones to decide on what charges are placed against a potential criminal to justify his arrest.  This charge, regardless of the outcome in court will follow a person for years.  With the decision of one arresting officer, a person’s life can change dramatically.  Without due process, a person carries a record of having been arrested for a crime.

The charges should be officially brought by a judge or jury after going over the evidence.  Then, should the charges be dropped or the person found innocent, the charges should be expunged from the person’s record.

Any person in this country may be charged and jailed for any crime at any time. Is it right that the charge remains on one’s record?  Our system now provides for an official rumor.  This is just plain wrong.

RULES

I saw a television show the other night on Smoke Jumpers that was very interesting.  I think the job would be very dangerous and exciting. One little statement in the story struck me as odd and funny, and I see it as a reflection of how we deal with a lot of things in daily life.

The Smoke Jumpers years ago instituted what they call the 10:00AM rule.  If they can’t put out the fire by 10:00AM one day, they’ll do it by 10:00AM the next day.  Let me translate.  “We’ll do it now and if we can’t do it now we’ll do it later.  That is our rule.”

INTERNET

I recently bought a new computer and the pop-up ads are ridiculous.  I got Windows XP with the computer.  I’ve had a cable modem connection to the Internet for a while now, using it with Windows 98 and Windows ME so I’m always online, even when I’m not online. I never had all the pop-up ads with the other two operating systems.  I’m now convinced that Microsoft puts doors in the XP to open a portal to more advertisers hitting a user with pop-ups.

When I’m going about my business, I leave the computer on but not usually on the online screen.  Suddenly in the middle of the desktop screen is an ad.  The thing that upsets me most about all of this is that most of the pop-up ads that I get are for programs to stop pop-up ads.

(Update:  I found a program deep inside of XP that’s only use is to allow pop ups.  I turned it off).

GAYS AND MORE

I’m sticking my neck out here in this time of political correctness, but I want to know what all the hoopla is about.  What does someone’s sex life have to do with the business at hand?  What does it have to do with friendship?  If I as a man have a lady friend, my motivation for being with her is not sexual.  It’s the same for business.  What my friend or business associate does in his or her bedroom is none of my concern.

This business of gay marriage is crazy.  What difference can it possible make to anyone except the people wanting to get married?  And who is the government to have its fingers in such a personal situation anyway?  I don’t accept government sanctioning as the final word.

A good point was made by a lady on television a few nights ago.  I liked her attitude when she said, “The people who are up in arms about gay marriage are the same people that were up in arms about gays being promiscuous.”  Damned if they do and damned if they don’t.  It’s kind of like putting down blacks for being worthless but pointing out a successful one and calling him an “uppity nigger.”  Which way do you people want it?

Where I draw the line with gender or racial “acceptance” is when they are more accepted than me.  The straight, white, American born, middle-class, 35-55 year old male is at the bottom of the “special” list.  I would place at the top of the “special” list a single, unemployed, 25 year old, black, lesbian, disabled veteran with 4 kids.  That girl could write her own ticket.

NEWS FLASH

“And now for the Nightly Six O’clock Speculation.”

ONE-WORLD-GOVERNMENT

Has anyone sat up and watched the actions of the United States of late in relation to One-World-Government?  It seems to me that critics of any such government (me included) should be screaming about our involvement in the daily affairs of these other countries.  It is slowly occurring to me that maybe the U.N. really isn’t the culprit in the idea of a One-World-Government.  Maybe it is our government that wants the responsibility.  After all, Democracy is almost like a religion and as such those that worship it should propagate it.  Spread the word and the wealth.  Every notice how the politicians either running for office or asking for money seem to take on the attitudes of evangelists?

I’m tired of our Liberal media showing us pictures of crying women and children in war torn countries while the men fire machine guns and throw grenades.  Then the Liberal media pick at any action that we take except for sending food and money.

Better take notice folks, who is pushing One-World-Government?

GRAY DAVIS

I’ve been hearing arguments about postponing the recall election until next year.  The people pushing for the postponement say that it would be cheaper to have this election with another election scheduled for early in 2004.  Bull.  Why would anyone want Gray Davis in office for even one more day?  The second reason was to allow Davis the opportunity to get his name on the recall ballot.  Excuse me?  First of all there are 300 people on the ballot and they got there by paying their money and signing up.  It doesn’t take months to do this.

Of course there are people that would say, “We are having this election to remove Davis.  He can’t be on the ballot.”  Of course he can.  If he wants to then that should be his prerogative. Sally Jones, John Smith, and Dudley Do-right, as citizens of California made their decisions to run and Davis should have the same opportunity to show what a complete fool he is.

Hello representatives, “ROaR” is now in affect -“REPRESENT OR RECALL!”

V.E.T.

Once again it is up to us to stop the rebirth of V.E.T.  Contrary to popular opinion, it isn’t over.  In the last few months, with the imminent demise of V.E.T., there have been numerous news stories concerning air pollution.  What the media and the politicians are doing is building up a puss head to the pimple that is V.E.T.  When it appears to everybody that the pimple is throbbing they’ll pop that sucker and spurt puss on all of us taxpayers.  The only entities that will enjoy any pain relief will be those directly in line to make a profit on testing our vehicles, like Louisville and Art Williams.

We already know about our factories belching pollution; our good mayor has met with them concerning this.  Do you really believe that the “leaders” of this “world class and vibrant,” wanna-be-white-collar town will tell the factories to clean up or get out?  Nope, they’ll tell us to cough the smog and cough up the dough at V.E.T.

Call your City Councilman, call the Mayor, and call Metro Call.  Be a thorn in their sides unless you want to sit in line at V.E.T., spend the money for the test, and still breathe factory smoke.
