Letter from Donna Mancini to David Hawpe
Dear David,
I read your editorial in the Sunday paper
today. I appreciate the fact that you admit that you are a " tax and spend
Liberal." At least you are Honest! The problem that I have with many
politicians and influential people today is they "Say" they are for fewer
rules and regulations and less government control and lower taxes, But in
*REALITY* they Behave quite the opposite!! The reason I like YOU is that you
tell the truth about your philosophy on life, and don't LIE about it!! I
think you are WRONG, but I still respect you for your honesty and concern
about humankind.
On a similar note about Taxes, here’s what
economist Milton Friedman says about spending our own vs. other people’s money:(
Needless to say, I agree with him)
"When a man spends his own money to buy
something for himself, he is very careful about how much he spends and how he
spends it. When a man spends his own money to buy something for someone else, he
is still very careful about how much he spends, but somewhat less what he spends
it on. When a man spends someone else's money to buy something for himself, he
is very careful about what he buys, but doesn't care at all how much he spends.
And when a man spends someone else's money on someone else, he doesn't care how
much he spends or what he spends it on. And that's government for you."
--Economist and Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman
David,
Face it, human beings operate in their own self
interest, and that is REALITY. Politicians and government are not super human
"deities" who are selfless or Angels. Government is basically self serving,
because that is human nature and "reasonable".
To have individuals keep the "maximum
amount" of their own money (truly necessary collective ventures DO exist) and
run their own lives according to their own values and economic self interest
is the best and most successful way according to the history of Civilization to
have the MOST people live well on this Beautiful planet .
Utopia does not exist, but FREEDOM WORKS the
BEST for the MOST!!.
Very sincerely yours,
Donna Mancini,
Hawpe’s response:
Donna:
Thank you for the note. Friedman is not an
easy person with whom to debate.
He's smarter than the average journalist.
David H.
Donna again:
David,
You are welcome.
Regarding the intelligence of the "average
Journalist", I think they could easily follow his logic if they
tried. How many people do you think eat dinner at the Big steak houses that
charge 30+ bucks for your MEAT, ( NO potatoes or veggies) who are not on
expense accounts ? Unless of course it is your 25th anniversary or your 50th
Birthday, or something else really BIG, ha, ha. Otherwise its the Chinese
Buffet!
Donna Mancini
