“When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.”
-- P.J. O'Rourke

Kay McClanahan at Freedom 21 Conference      By Theresa Fritz Camoriano      Last week I promised to tell you more about the speakers at the Freedom 21 Conference in Nashville. One very compelling speaker was Kay McClanahan, from Columbia, South Carolina.  Kay had worked for many years as a forensic scientist for the state of South Carolina, being the first woman in that investigative group, and she and her husband had looked forward to retiring to their horse farm in Richmond county, south of Columbia.  Instead of being able to relax and enjoy their horse farm, Kay said, they are spending every waking hour just trying to save the farm.          (Click to Read More)

Evolving Law      By George Baumler        Not being a member of the lawyer race, it is a little bit of a reach for me to write about law, but since I am expected to live under these rules it is appropriate for me to discuss them in a general sense.  The Libertarian Party of Greater Louisville had a guest speaker from a local "news" paper, who made the remark that campaign finance law was an evolving thing; in such a tone you could tell he thought it a good idea, too.  Now, I don't know much, but evolving sounds like changing to me.  The campaign finance laws are as Byzantine as the rules for six-legged hopscotch without throwing “evolving” into the equation.          (Click to Read More)

Falling Through The Holes In The Government “Safety Net”       By Theresa Fritz Camoriano       In the past couple of weeks, the readers of Louisville’s C-J have been seeing one front page story after another about the suffering of people who are losing the government programs on which they have been depending for help.  From a single mother who will not be able to get free child care for her new baby, to mentally ill individuals who are losing the ability to obtain free care, to elderly patients who will no longer be able to receive nursing home care, the record is full of people who are “falling through the holes in the government safety net.”           (Click to Read More)

Another look at global warming       By J.V. Mitchell       We continue to hear talk about "global warming". Twenty or thirty years ago, some of the same people, who are now concerned with warming, were warning us about impending "global cooling", as in ice age. But, I guess the times are a-changing.          (Click to Read More)

Liberals’ View of Immigrants        By Will Freedom        On a recent trip to south Florida, as well as the central part of that state, I was struck by the strange -- no, schizophrenic view Liberals have of Hispanic immigrants.  On one hand, the softhearted socialists decry the menial jobs, low pay and long hours worked by migratory laborers, while, on the other, they heap derision and palpable hatred on successful individuals from the Hispanic community. Hispanics most despised seem to be any immigrant of independent means from Central or South America who moves into or builds a nice home.  In the central portion of Florida, I met immigrants from Mexico and Central America who work and share the American dream and aren't looking for a handout from anyone.          (Click to Read More)

Automobile Emissions Testing Technician's Syndrome      By Thomas Crane       In an article that was published in the Kentucky Post Newspaper dated February 1, 2002, titled, "At E-check, an unwelcome sight,"  it stated, "State officials are investigating Northern Kentucky's vehicle emission testing centers after a motorist said employees offered to pass his car if he didn't tell authorities he had seen employees 'mooning' each other."  It went on to say that, "Steve Milburn of Envirotest said his company took swift action to immediately fire the employees."          (Click to Read More)

Unbelievable McConnell plaintiffs strike again on campaign finance reform lawsuit       by Jim Babka      "Unbelievable." Maybe you won't be surprised by this level of political arrogance, but I find it unbelievable.          (Click to Read More)

Terry's Tidbits       by Terry Gray

Kay McClanahan

“All the TV shows are full of Democrats all furious, criticizing President Bush for the State of the Union Address. They said he exaggerated some of the facts. See, that's something Bill Clinton never did. Clinton never stretched the truth; Clinton never even came close to the truth.”

Jay Leno

Free State Project

Civilization and profits go hand in hand.
-- Calvin Coolidge

“Competition in the market aims at assigning to every individual that function in the social system in which he can render to all his fellow men the most valuable of the services he is able to perform.”
-- Ludwig von Mises
