Just Don’t Do It!

By Donna Walker Mancini

Today, a popular Athletic Shoe slogan says, “JUST DO IT”.  Of course, that implies that we should all get off our derrieres and follow our dreams and pursue our wildest goals!

However,   I am suggesting that We “Freedom Lovers”  should  institutionalize the “negative” version of  that familiar slogan.
How about :  “JUST DON’T DO IT!”

If you think “IT” is wrong, bad, immoral, unhealthy, or fattening, then don't do it, but don't insist that everyone else not do “IT” either!!

There is an ever-increasing  number of folks who, if they decide
that a certain behavior is not good for “themselves”,  or is “BAD”, want to impose their “will” or standards on everyone else by passing a law that forcibly prevents everyone from doing that behavior!!

Nowadays, it appears to be in “vogue” to use Legislation (force) instead of  Education (persuasion) to impose our personal  values and ideologies on the  REST of the GANG!!!!

What ever happened to the concept of LIVE and LET LIVE?

Regarding the Smoking Ban in Lexington: I am a non smoker; however, I
think it is wrong to impose state control to prevent smoking on a person’s private property.  A restaurant or business is Privately owned. It is not a “public place”.  The word “public place” should refer to something that is owned by the “government”, or is tax funded.   A restaurant or business is not PUBLIC just because it serves the “public.”  The property owner should have the right to choose whether he or she prefers to make it a smoking or non smoking establishment, based on what is best for Business.  If a restaurant wants to permit smoking, some customers may undoubtably
choose to stay away and eat or shop somewhere that is smoke free.  Another business owner may choose to make his business smoke free, and the people who dislike being around smokers will frequent his facility.  The  owner of the establishment should decide what crowd he wishes to cater to, and how to go about doing it, Not the State, which  has no financial interest in the property owner’s private  business.

To top it all off,  The  truly “PUBLIC” or Government-owned  buildings are
exempt from the law! (Surprise, surprise) as they have “legal” smoking rooms.

If we think we have the answer to humanity’s problems, we should try to “sell” it to others and let them make their own decision on the matter. If our
reasoning, facts and examples are on target, then we should be able to “close
the sale” and convince them to do things our way.  Coercion, or laws, should be used only to protect individuals from force and fraud and to enforce contracts – not to force other people to do things our way.

As Individuals, we think we know what is best for ourselves and our families!!  And so do those other guys!!

The next time you hear someone say, “There ought to be a law.....”,
 Negate the state !!

Reply with “JUST DON"T DO IT”, which in fact is just another way of saying “LIVE and LET LIVE”.
