A leap toward socialized medicine Bush and the GOP-controlled Congress have abandoned the free market approach -- protecting free choice by gradually eliminating subsidized health care for seniors -- because it has been deemed politically impossible. Instead, Bush's Medicare bill lets bureaucrats control how, when, where -- and whether -- older Americans receive treatment. …The President's latest compromise makes Bush the nation's foremost advocate of state-run health care -- which, for every American, means less choice, higher costs and one huge step toward socialized medicine. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2900

Global warming:  Nature or nurture? The June issue of Scientific American highlighted some research results out of Columbia University. Recently, Professor Richard Wilson published a peer-reviewed article in the journal Geophysical Research Letters where he reported the results of his studies on the amount of solar energy that our sun has been producing over the last 24 years. During this time period, the amount of energy the sun is producing has increased by 0.05% every 10 years.  http://www.mises.org/fullstory.asp?control=1240

Eco-nomics – Economics and the environment by Walter Williams If we gave environmentalists Alaska's National Wildlife Refuge, you can bet your last dollar that there'd be oil drilling. Why? It would now cost them something to keep the oil in the ground. … Stroup's "Eco-nomics" is less than 100 pages long but contains powerful lessons for sensible approaches to the world's environmental issues.http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2866

I dare call it treason – Anne Coulter http://www.anncoulter.org/columns/2003/062503e.htm

Saving racism in our universities – Thomas Sowell  - Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's majority decision upholding affirmative action in admissions to the University of Michigan Law School was her classic split-the-baby formula, washed down with rambling rhetoric, and making a mockery of the law. This decision provoked not only dissent from four other justices, but sarcasm and disgust -- as it should have. … She uses the phrase "compelling interest" to get around the 14th Amendment's requirement of equal treatment, much as earlier generations of justices used the phrase "interstate commerce" to evade Constitutional limits on the powers of Congress.http://www.townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/ts20030626.shtml

A glimpse of economic reality – Thomas Sowell - Trains are not a perfect substitute for planes at all distances, nor is Linux a perfect substitute for Windows in all uses. But to totally exclude it from the definition of the market that Microsoft "controls" is all too typical of the unreality of anti-trust "law." http://www.townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/ts20030627.shtml

Cancer cluster buster – Michelle Malkin - If it isn't the evil chemicals or invisible rays, then what's causing the alleged cancer cluster in Long Island? Scientists not seeking Senate re-election have noted that certain lifestyle choices -- from smoking to delaying child-bearing to opting against breast-feeding -- have been associated with higher rates of breast cancer. Alas, pointing out these epidemiological connections won't win you Long Island soccer mom votes…. That won't stop politicians from trying, of course. Preaching fear has always been more lucrative than promoting skepticism. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/michellemalkin/mm20030627.shtml

The dark side of liberalism - The author encourages three missions that would "vastly improve our country" if the citizenry took them to heart. Rebuilding "a culture of character," honoring true heroes, and ridding the judiciary of its activism are goals for conservatives interested in restoring the Founders' principles in our nation. The latter goal is particularly important since the law is "grounded on public confidence." http://www.townhall.com/bookclub/kent.html

In defense of property rights – This article was part of a 1993 pamphlet that addressed the political philosophy underlying zoning as well as the specific arguments made by the pro-zoning advocates in Houston. The pamphlet was distributed by the Houston Objectivism Society, by the Committee for Property Rights, and by other anti-zoning groups in Houston. After months of contentious debate, zoning was defeated by Houston voters in a 1993 referendum.  http://capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2832 , part 3 the nature of zoning http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2834 , part 4 In Shreveport, government regulations accounted for 21% of the project cost. In Allegheny County, an additional 24% was added, and in Hayward, the cost increased 33%. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2835 , part 5 The advocates of zoning seek to posit themselves as the agents of the public, declaring that they will lead us to economic growth and a better "quality of life." But the truth is, developers-- who must meet the freely chosen demands of the marketplace-- are the true agents of the public. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2836 and part 6 Where zoning advocates believe that individuals should be compelled to sacrifice their values to those of the community, the neighborhood, or some other collective, we believe that individuals should be free to pursue their own values without interference from others. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2837

Prescription drug benefits for the elderly – by Thomas Sowell Why should seniors be singled out to be subsidized by the taxpayers, except that their votes are being sought by both parties? …The poor are a relatively small problem that can be dealt with at relatively modest costs. But they are a major excuse for spending the taxpayers' money on people who are not poor and imposing government controls on all of us. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2867

Libertarians take state for test drive - Over the next week, a delegation will be touring New Hampshire, testing the state's receptiveness to 20,000 new residents with an agenda. http://www.cmonitor.com/stories/news/recent2003/libertarians062303_2003.shtml
