CANCER CAUSING AIR POLLUTION – Woody Oakes

An estimated 178,000 pounds of Butadiene, a deadly, cancer-causing chemical is released into the air in Jefferson County each year.

Of this total, 58% comes from the American Synthetic Rubber plant,

10% comes from Zeon Chemicals, and 2% from Rohm-Haas Co. (Per info in the Courier-Journal May 22, 2003)

Leaving most, but not all, of the remaining 30% from motorized vehicles and equipment, which, when divided up, amounts to;

21% from non-resident vehicles driving throughout Jefferson County daily that are not subject to Vehicle Exhaust Testing.  (VET).

9% from resident VET tested and exempt vehicles.  The VET exempt vehicles include large trucks, construction vehicles, and lawn care equipment, etc.

97% of the tested vehicles pass the VET, which leaves only about one quarter of one percent of this chemical from VET failed motor vehicles.

Think about it… only one quarter of one percent of the chemical from VET failed vehicles, which are supposedly repaired.

Thankfully, the VET is scheduled to expire Nov. 1 this year.

Among other hazardous chemicals released into the air from various industries are trichloroethylene, chromium, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, perchloroethylene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, but that’s another story, a story that would describe how the Phillip Morris Co. closed its plant here and then sold its air pollution credits to Ford Motor Company, a sale The Jefferson County Air Pollution Control Board approved.  Go figure.
