“When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.”
-- P.J. O'Rourke

Toxic Air and Budgetspeak In Washington, Frankfort, and Louisville      By Theresa Fritz Camoriano      There has recently been a big flap about Louisville having the dirtiest, most dangerous air in the country.  Of course, we have not been given actual data comparing Louisville with other places for a wide range of pollutants or data proving that the pollutants in Louisville are more dangerous to human health than the pollutants in other places – we’re just supposed to take these “facts” on faith.  (Click to Read More)

The Godfather Waltz     By Gordon Francis Corbett      Long ago, a San José, California, television station's UHF channel-number inspired its owners to advertise it as "the perfect 36."  In the wake of the movie, "The Godfather," MMM Carpets created a skit that mimicked this film, and "the perfect 36" broadcast it as a commercial during MMM Carpets' nightly movies.  (Click to Read More)

Gasoline Tax Hike, FCC Deregulation      By Pat Pending      There is currently a proposal to raise the federal gasoline tax.  Before anyone supports such a tax hike, he ought to look seriously at how the current federal gasoline tax is being used.  Current set-asides require federal gasoline taxes, paid by automobile drivers, to be used for wasteful, boondoggle projects like light rail, which do absolutely nothing to benefit the drivers who paid the taxes and which become a financial drain on the communities in which they are located.   (Click to Read More)

TERRY’S TIDBITS       By Terry Gray      I was watching the news recently when an item came on that featured a man climbing up to the balcony of his burning apartment.  There seemed to be a lot of firefighters standing around, getting out equipment, and otherwise occupied with the routine of putting out a fire.  So what was this man doing climbing up on his balcony?  He was rescuing his dog.  (Click to Read More)

The "New" Pennsylvania Slogan: Pay Me Now and Pay Me Later      Grant R. Gulibon       Remember the television commercials promoting a major brand of automotive motor oil that featured the statement "pay me now, or pay me later"?  Well, when it comes to business taxes, Pennsylvania may soon have a new slogan of its own--"Pay me now, and pay me later."  (Click to Read More)

“It is not the function of our Government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the Government from falling into error.”

-- Robert Houghwout Jackson, Chief Judge at the War-Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg

"Someone quoted in the New York Times recently referred to the Bush tax cut as one in which 'most of the benefits would be showered on the richest taxpayers.' Keeping money that you yourself earned is called having benefits 'showered' on you. ... Big spenders and big taxers never want to face the fact that wealth is not created by government, but by the people the government taxes." --Thomas Sowell
