Smith To Lexington Council:
To LFUCG
Council Members:
I wish to
take this opportunity to thank the members of the LFUCG Council for refusing the
tax-hike budget submitted by Mayor Teresa Isaac.
In these
times where families have been overtaxed to death, have been forced to maintain
two jobs to keep the American dream alive, and have seen wasteful government
programs whittle away at theirs and their children's futures, it is a pleasure
to see the Council take a stand against another tax hike. Do not think, for a
minute, that the people of Lexington are fooled by Mayor Isaac's efforts to make
the Council shoulder her burden.
Many people
are out of work due to the sluggish economy and increasing taxes does nothing to
help that situation. On the contrary, it does just the opposite. When companies
are considering places to locate their operations, one of the items of
particular interest to them is the tax burden on businesses and the employees of
those businesses.
Many, make
that most of us, in the private sector have had to tighten our "financial belts"
these past few years due to the economic situation worldwide. It is wrong to ask
us to pay more to our overstuffed and inefficient governments simply to provide
more or the same level of services to the community. In addition it is wrong to
ask taxpayers to accept a higher tax burden simply to keep jobs for government
employees when many of us in the private sector have lost our jobs or seen
members of our families lose their jobs. Many Lexington firms are currently
considering more layoffs at this time, Trane, Linkbelt, and Square D are among
them. It is time for our LFUCG to tighten its belt just as those of us who pay
dearly to the LFUCG have had to do.
I implore the
LFUCG Council to do the right thing and stop the madness now. REFUSE to approve
any budget that does not include drastic cuts in government programs and
government jobs. It is not a good thing to be in a position where you have to
ask people to enter the roles of the unemployed, but you were all elected to
make the tough decisions needed to keep our community sound. Do the right thing
while you still have the chance. History shines a bright light upon those that
made tough and sometimes unpopular decisions for our brighter future.
I, myself,
lost my job of 10 years a while back, and I thought it was the worst thing ever
to happen to me. Since then, I have made a much better employment scenario for
myself and it turned out for the best as it always does. Please suck it up and
do the right thing. Lexington taxpayers need relief, not more burden.
Respectfully,
Jeffrey D.
