HOMELAND SECURITY – CLARIFICATION

Terry Gray

In last week’s Jefferson Review I posted an article on Homeland Security.  www.jeffersonreview.com/articles/2003/041403/homeland.htm.  My editor did her job and editorialized my editorial.  In rereading my story I fell from my chair and rolled on the floor for several minutes in total denial of what I had written.  My editor was right; a paragraph threw the whole article off center and made me look like a Liberal.  My world was shattered.  Let me make amends.  Here’s the fatal paragraph.

The only place that our government has taken a stance to protect our Constitution and thus our rights as citizens of this “free” country is in racial civil rights.  Exceptions are made to their rulings for racial profiling and other civil rights violations.”

When I wrote this I wrote it with the idea that in the context of the article, this paragraph would be understood to mean that I disagreed with the policy of the government’s endorsement of unfair racial “brownie points”.  I did not mean that the government’s policies on for instance, racial quotas (affirmative action) were in any way a protection of our constitutional rights.  Affirmative action is a slap in the face to any person of “non color” and degrading to those it was meant to help.

Those that read my stuff should know my ideas and attitudes, or so I thought.  But who knows my writing better than my editor?  She misunderstood and that was enough for me to sit up.

So with much humility and a touch of embarrassment I say,  “I’m sorry worthy readers and I thank you my editor for keeping me on my toes.  I’ll do better, I promise.”
