Short Takes – by Theresa Fritz Camoriano
1.
We finally have definitive
evidence that there is at least one lawyer who is a decent human being.
He is halfway around the world, in Iraq, and
he risked his life to help rescue Private Jessica Lynch. If most people had his
kind of moral compass and backbone, it would be impossible for tyrants to rule
over anyone. We should all admire him and try to emulate him by doing our part
to promote respect for individuals in the communities where we live.
2.
Yet another study shows that
the State of Kentucky needs to put more tax money into the government schools in
order to meet its responsibilities.
These studies are sponsored by the people who would be on the receiving end of
the money, so we should not be surprised at their findings. But let’s try
conducting a more objective study for a change, based on real life evidence.
We need only look at all the private schools that do a far superior job of
educating children for half the cost or less. Hmmmm. If the Kentucky state
legislature really wants to do something beneficial for our
children, it will end the government monopoly over education so parents will be
free to buy the educational services they choose for their own children, just as
they now are free to buy food, clothing, and lawn care services.
3.
The Dixie Chicks,
seeing their sales plummet after speaking disrespectfully about President Bush
while performing in England, now say they
can’t understand why anyone cares what they said about the President and the
war. After all, say the chicks, they are just a singing group! They, and Peter
Arnett, who granted an outrageous interview to Iraqi television, are wonderful
examples of the fact that freedom works. They are free to speak their
minds, and consumers are free to buy or not to buy their products.
4.
I tried
my father’s “cure” for sinus problems, and it actually works! In
desperation, after repeated sinus infections, I tried my father’s remedy, using
a hand-held massager to massage my face and head. The vibration caused the
sinuses to drain, relieving the congestion. My office assistant, Carolyn,
thinks this proves that I am certifiably insane, and time will tell how much
brain damage will be caused by all that vibration, but I think Dad is really
onto something!
5.
The Courier-Journal editorial board has written an editorial stating that
the yard signs saying “Support President Bush and Our Troops” are
“noxious”! Wow!
6.
It is very unfortunate that the
Republican candidates for Kentucky Governor are busy trying to tear each other
apart rather than proposing solutions for the state’s problems.
Instead of suing to try to disqualify Ernie Fletcher from running, I’d like to
hear the Nunn campaign explain how Nunn’s proposals to raise our taxes will
improve the state. Meanwhile, Rebecca Jackson tsk-tsks about how Fletcher has
let us down by choosing a running mate who, at the lower court level, was found
not to meet the residency requirements, as if this were a huge moral scandal on
a par with Governor Patton’s providing special state favors for his mistress.
Jackson is loaded with emotional
rhetoric, but, unfortunately, she is very short on concrete policy proposals.
Meanwhile, Virgil Moore’s own running mate has decided not to campaign with him
any more. If Moore can’t even assemble a team of two people who will pull
together, how could he possibly do a good job of running the state? I am
beginning to understand why Fletcher is supported by the Republican “insiders”
and is the front runner. He seems to be the only candidate who is putting
forward serious policy proposals.
