“Sir Dan” and the VET

By Claude Bohn

A Jan. 17 editorial in the Louisville Courier-Journal, entitled, "Sir Dan's costly victory," stated:

"...killing an unloved bureaucratic program...takes no courage..."

I disagree! Of course it takes courage! And lots of it!  Which, no doubt, explains why similar inane programs are not struck down more often.

The editorial then added: "What takes courage is defending Vehicle Emissions Testing, which has played a real role in improving Louisville’s air."

Indeed!  The same “courage,” with which the flat earth theory was defended.

The editorial goes on to say: [Senator Seum] "didn't worry that the summer of '02 would be smoggy." My question is, "Why should he have?" Considering that the VET is a proven fraud, having little or nothing to do with remedying this problem? After all, was not the VET still in place during the summer of '02? Or does the editorial writer merely think us gullible enough to believe that the relative handful of exemptions - the overwhelming majority of which would have passed the VET anyway - were the cause of this condition? I, for one, am not hoodwinked!

Finally, in true social democratic fashion, the writer feigns concern for the pocketbooks of the beleaguered masses. Where was this concern while our pockets were being picked to support this fraud for the last quarter century? Referring to the cost, of compensating Gordon-Darby for lost revenue due to the VET’s demise, the writer laments, "public money" has been wasted! Perhaps, but better the APCD pay, with “public money” already extorted from us, than to continue this fraud and throw good money after bad! Add to that, that the bureaucrats at the APCD will now have less “public money” with which to inflict any similar nonsense on us, and it adds up to money well spent, in my opinion. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. Thank you brave Sir Dan!

Sincerely,

Claude A. Bohn
