MERRY MARRIOTT
By Terry Gray
A
ground breaking recently took place for the new taxpayer owned Marriott in what
would be “VIBRANT DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE”. Mayor Dave drove the bulldozer and
everything. Such forethought and planning has gone into this anchor for
“VIBRANT DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE” that the ceremony took place before the needed
property acquisition. It seems that Mayor Dave and his lackeys have two
messages to send through their ceremonial agenda, appeasing Marriott and showing
the “girls, girls, girls” that the power of governmental condemnation is on the
side of “families, families, families”. I wonder if the “girls, girls, girls”
have “families, families, families”? If you really want to draw conventions why
don’t you put some of those “girls, girls, girls” to work at the Marriott?
There
are about 30 hotels/motels in the Louisville area. One of those is a Marriott
and, I’m only guessing, some others are Marriott affiliates. Five nice
hotels/motels are in “VIBRANT DOWNTOWN”. That’s a lot of rooms for a dying
downtown. Marriott will be a nice bandage for what ails a Demon-cratic
controlled metro government but where is the medicine?
We
taxpayers will hold a $46.5 million bond on the hotel and will fund a $1 million
walkway from the Marriott to the Galt House. Why? Will visitors be needing a
quick egress from the Marriott to the Galt House? Maybe it’s the other way
around. Maybe the faithful, long standing Galt House will serve as a lobby for
the Marriott. Who knows what these yahoos are thinking?
I will
give them this however, a $110 million Marriott, partially taxpayer funded, but
paying taxes, will be more useful, more attractive, and by far easier on the
citizens’ pockets than a $106 million light rail system that is totally taxpayer
funded and becomes a continuous drain on the taxpayers. No, I’m not making some
esoteric comparison. They both, as well as every other idea that our brave
leaders birth, are part of the “NEW VIBRANT DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE”.
Mayor
Dave, I was wondering if there are any out-of-work, QUALIFIED bulldozer
operators in the area that would have been happy to knock down that shack for a
few bucks? It would have been a nice gesture and great public relations to have
included a “Peasant Joe” taxpayer in your ceremony. After all, we peasants own
most of it.

(Editor’s note: Perhaps we common folk could find ways to encourage the owners
of the Marriott and the elected officials who vote for these boondoggles to
regain their self-esteem and their sense of shame at robbing the taxpayers.
Boycotting the recipients of corporate welfare and voting the rascals out come
to mind.)
