Terry Gray’s Thoughts and Predictions As A Non-Elected Candidate for Louisville Metro Council District 21

Dan Johnson won the election and I lost.  Congratulations, yada, yada, yada.

Here are my predictions for the next few years starting in January with little let up and intensity normally reserved for cataclysmic events of epoch proportions. City government is going to be busy and when the dust clears, our pockets are will be a whole lot lighter and what freedoms we once enjoyed will be but memories.

Yes, we elected some Republicans for city council, just the other side of the same coin.  But Mayor Jerry’s rubber stamp machine will be in full swing and the Republicans will be swept along in the fervor; indoctrinated into mainstream Democratic politics like shackled little girls in a big forest surrounded by hungry wolves.

1.    The budget will be in turmoil.  While campaigning, the incumbents in this election steered away from the doom and gloom of a budget shortfall.  Of course they did.  They were the ones irresponsibly spending the money belonging to the people, uh, new government.  How could they cast doubt on their own wisdom?  Now however, they will cry that all the spending during pre-election wasn’t their fault, they were only doing what was best for the taxpayers and that they were forced to spend, spend, spend. Question:  Have we ever, as taxpayers been patted on the back for a budget surplus?  No.  Have we ever been blamed for a budget shortfall?  Yes.  We aren’t doing our part and therefore our taxes will be raised.

2.    The police merger will be acted upon quickly and will likely leave the cops out of the equation.  There are going to be big and heavy glitches, some concerning pay disparity and some involving the unions.  The $30,000,000.00 they claim they need for the communications system will come from our pockets because they will ignore a less costly system for interfacing the two radio systems.  They’ll cry that our security is in jeopardy and use our loved ones as hostages to get what they want.  Once a new tax has been forced upon us, they’ll miraculously find a less costly solution, one that I’ve been telling you about all along, but of course they’ll keep the tax hike.  OR, they’ll suddenly find the cheaper solution before they raise the “cop tax” and tell us how they saved us so much money on this issue but now they need just a little more money for something else.  Either way, we’ll pay.

3.    Light rail will prevail at a cost of $603,000,000.00.  We really have no say in this but what else is new?  The figure of $603 million is just an estimate mind you and it is once in a blue moon that the government comes in on budget and on schedule.  If they can sneak by on this project without raising taxes, which I doubt, they’ll need to raise taxes for operating costs.

4.    V.E.T. will once again be miraculously raised from the dead.  See, the city stands to lose millions from the loss of V.E.T. through what revenue they receive from the testing and from state and federal incentives for emissions reductions.  Count on V.E.T. being in the picture.  In my debate with Dan Johnson he mentioned that V.E.T. in its current form was a problem.  He wants to see vehicle inspections that will include emissions testing.  Oh boy, from bad to worse.

5.    There will be more laws.  By having a Democrat mayor and majority Democrat City Council you can rest assured that your city will be well provided for to the demise of our pockets and freedoms.  The idea of allowing ordinances to sunset is just plain stupid.  If the law is old and unused, get rid of it.  A sunset ordinance to remove ordinances is ridiculous.  Besides, it takes five years for an unused ordinance to go away.  Why wait?  We have a chicken leash ordinance, Mylar balloon ordinance, drunkenness ordinance, itching powder ordinance, and nuisance ordinances that are so sweeping and arbitrary as to be unconstitutional.  A city code inspector determines if you are in violation of a nuisance ordinance and there is really no definition of what constitutes a nuisance, much less a violation.  A city inspector may enter your home at any time under the guise of public safety.  What kind of crap is that?

The bottom-line folks is that if you voted Democrat then you deserve what you get.  The problem is that you also made the rest of us get what you deserve.  How is that for democracy?  The democrats will be the first ones whining when Uncle Sugar reaches into their pockets, “For their own good and for the good of society”.

One good thing that I can see happening from all of this is my writing targets.  Mayor Dave was getting old and I was getting bored.  He went from extravagantly stupid to mundane.  The last little thing he did for his beloved city I just left alone.  His rooftop garden to clean the city’s air was just too “out there”.  I couldn’t bring myself to pick on him any more.  He no longer inspired me.  I felt sorry for him.  BUT NOW, I have a new and vibrant Mayor, one that offsets the atmosphere of downtown, much to the chagrin of our beloved officials.  It shall be juicy and I shall wallow in the frothy warm mud that will follow Mayor Jerry everywhere he goes.  Inspire me oh honorable one.  OH HAPPY DAYS.
