Mike Waddell sets
Libertarians apart
With stand on discretionary
funds
Mike
Waddell, the Libertarian Candidate for the 23 District Metro Council Seat, set
himself apart from the two major party candidates and an independent in his
League of Women Voters debate Last Thursday evening. The Democratic candidate,
Melvin Ratchford, involved in
government for 20 years, seemed to think discretionary funds were necessary. The
independent candidate, Damien Brown, also thought the discretionary funds were
necessary to fund special projects, such as united ministries. The Republican,
James Peden, thought the funds were good to protect the districts from a
vindictive majority who would not fund projects in a district represented by a
minority party. Only Mike Waddell had the integrity to stand up and state that
the discretionary funds amounted to little more than political pork.
On
the topic of the VET, all seemed in agreement that Louisville was well rid of
the VET, except the Democrat, who lamented that the federal government would
eventually determine whether or not the VET would return. Mike Waddell also
stated that he would not support any new taxes or tax increases and that the
merged government would have to live within its budget. Mike Waddell indicated,
when asked which ordinances should be allowed to sunset, that he thought that
they should be considered on a case by case basis. Mike explained the basic
Libertarian positions on personal freedom and responsibility to the in-house and
TV audience. Mike differed with his opponents on a range of issues, always
coming in on the side of less government and lower taxes.
