New Jersey Supreme Court ignores rule of law - In response to yesterday's New Jersey Supreme Court ruling on the Torricelli case, Cato scholars Robert Levy, senior fellow in constitutional studies, and Roger Pilon, director, Center for Constitutional Studies, issued the following statement:The New Jersey Supreme Court, disregarding utterly the rule of law, has chosen to circumvent the state legislature and interpret a provision of New Jersey law to mean the opposite of what the law expressly says. Nothing could be clearer than the procedures duly enacted by New Jersey's lawmakers "in the event of a vacancy, howsoever caused, among candidates nominated at primaries." Those procedures apply only when the "vacancy shall occur not later than the 51st day before the general election." Ignoring that crystalline text, the seven Supreme Court justices declared, in effect, "We will write the law as we prefer it to be, no matter what the voters of New Jersey, through their elected representatives, have decided." http://www.cato.org/new/10-02/10-03-02r.html

How subsidies and quotas steal from the poor and give to the rich  - American cotton farmers, textile manufacturers, and other producers who rely on subsidies or trade barriers are stealing twice: once from taxpayers or consumers (who have to pay higher prices because of tariffs and quotas) and once from low-cost competitors in countries where losing market share can mean going hungry. They are aided and abetted in this crime by President Bush and every member of Congress who helps shield them from competition. http://www.reason.com/sullum/100402.shtml

Latest version of old ploy (California family leave act) – by Thomas Sowell New York City and some other cities and states have already gone through this process, killing the goose that lays the golden egg. But this is a viable political strategy, so long as the goose doesn't die before the next election and the politicians' fingerprints can't be traced to the murder weapon. That is undoubtedly what Governor Gray Davis is counting on.http://www.capitalismmagazine.com/2002/october/ts_ploy.htm

A proper approach to business ethics - Aristotle would probably suggest that today’s corporate crooks were not egoistic, proud, and rational enough. They confused apparent goods for real goods. They confused money with happiness; they confused a brief spurt of fame with a successful professional career. http://www.capitalismmagazine.com/2002/september/aw_ethics.htm
