Donna Mancini on
the Louisville Mayoral Debate
The recent Louisville Forum
Debate, to which only the republican and
democrat candidate for Metro Mayor were invited, is a good example of why voters
are so apathetic. Why come out to vote when you are just voting for the “lesser
of two evils”, and no candidate really offers anything positive or new for you
to support?
The major party candidates
are all pretty much the same – they want to take your money and run your life.
They might spend your money a little bit differently and control different
aspects of your life, but there really isn’t much difference between them. We
third party candidates have the ability to bring fresh ideas to the table. If
we are able to get our ideas out and to connect with voters, we can win
elections. However, even if we don’t win, we can make a real difference in
public policy just by influencing the debate.
Elections are supposed to
be about ideas. A debate with only half the candidates is not a real debate.
While I respect the right of a private entity like The Forum to invite anyone
they wish to their debate, they have missed the opportunity for a real contest
of ideas for making this a better community by leaving me out.
Without the opportunity to express our ideas in candidate debates, how are
the little known third party candidates supposed to get our ideas out, gain
support, raise money and become major candidates?
This is America, where we honor and protect free speech and understand that
the free flow of ideas is vital to the health of our nation.
A responsible and credible candidate debate gives the voters a chance to hear
the ideas of ALL the candidates. To do anything less cheats the voters.
I’m Donna Mancini, and that’s my point of view.
