The First Weapon

By Gordon Francis Corbett

Imagine that in 1943, one Jew discovered that Hitler's goons were going to ship all Jews, not for "relocation," but for extermination;  and, that when he began warning his fellow Jews, his rabbi told him, "Come on, now. We must not start a panic."

There was cause for panic.  The German Government had disarmed almost every German, including Germany's Jews, long before Hitler took office. Civil disarmament always precedes wholesale political murder, as the histories of Turkey, Cambodia, and other countries discussed in the book, "Lethal Laws," amply demonstrate.

Worse, long before Hitler came to power, mores promoting order,
forbidding violence, and demanding subservience to authority had disarmed the German people psychologically.

Any fighter's first weapon is his mind.  Even if he has been disarmed physically, a person can organize his fellows if his mind will let him fight.  He can tell his friends, he can organize them, and he can lead them in obtaining a few firearms.  Those guns can help in acquiring more, which can, in turn, be used to arm more recruits.

This is how Jews sparked 1943's rebellion in Warsaw's ghetto, where organization and raw courage wreaked terrible damage on German General Juergen Stroop's soldiers.  Stroop eventually crushed the rebellion;  but, as Hitler had always intended to kill everyone anyway, resistance cost its poor inhabitants nothing.

We in America still can proceed peacefully.  We have lots of time.  We have many weapons and much ammunition.  We have good political ideas.  We can still organize.  These elements make a crucial difference.  Time, tools, good ideas, and organization can obviate violence.

Let us hasten to forestall it.
