A New American Pledge

 (In light of the recent federal court decision making it illegal to say the traditional pledge of allegiance in government schools, and in light of the fact that we would rather pledge allegiance to important principles than just to a piece of cloth, we propose the following replacement for the traditional pledge of allegiance.)

I pledge allegiance to the principles on which America was founded:

           To the right of all individuals to own and control their own bodies and the fruits of their labor;

           To the freedom of all individuals to associate and trade with whomever they choose, to live in accordance with the values they hold dear, and to raise their children in accordance with their own beliefs;

           To a government that derives its just powers from the consent of the governed; and

           To a consistent rule of law that defends life, liberty and property and treats all individuals equally and with respect.
