COURIER-JOURNAL’S POT CALLS THE KETTLE BLACK
Woody Oakes
David
Hawpe’s column of April 3rd really takes the cake. It should have
been published two days earlier on April Fools Day. In the article he accuses
State Senators Vernie McGaha and Dick Roeding of “pursuing their own agenda” by
“RIGGING A SURVEY TO SUGGEST THERE’S A BIG CONSTITUENCY FOR YOUR POSITION ON
A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE.” If this is not the pot calling the kettle black I
don’t know what is.
He goes on
to say “ASK LOADED QUESTIONS, GET THE ANSWERS YOU WANT AND USE THEM TO
JUSTIFY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE.”
Isn’t this
exactly what Mr. Hawpe and the Courier-Journal did with loaded questions and
distorted polls on video slots at the racetracks, false figures on gambling
revenue, false data on VET benefits, false scare tactics on the VET in an
attempt to save it, and even a headline on the same date stating “AT LEAST
ONE SAYS PATTON SHOULD VETO THE (VET) MEASURE.” Wow! That ONE
person really deserved a headline, didn’t he?
Mr. Hawpe’s
final sentence in his rant was somewhat true when he says he is a confirmed
naysayer. It would have been more accurate if he had said he was a confirmed
naysayer and to hell with what the Kentucky State Legislature and the citizens
of Jefferson County want.
