Bill to End VET Testing in Jefferson County Passes the Kentucky State Senate and is on its way to Governor Paul Patton! by John Riley
We have been waiting a very long time and our efforts have paid off. House Bill 618 passed in the Kentucky senate today (3-25-02)! HB618 will end vehicle emissions testing (VET) in Jefferson County as of November 1, 2003 at the end of the current contract with Gordon-Darby, Inc. Thank you Rep. Perry Clark and Sen. Dan Seum along with Sen. Julie Rose Denton and Rep. Kevin Bratcher! Thank you very much and thank you to the legislators who helped by voting for this bill. HB 618 passed in the house 89-7 and in the senate 26-12. The bill now goes to Gov. Paul Patton who has not indicated what he will do; however, it is expected he will sign the bill due to the overwhelming support in the Kentucky house and senate. Everyone who has been a part of bringing this issue to the public and showing the average person how to participate by making phone calls and distributing emails and handbills are the champions of liberty. Our political system works fine when people get involved. The lesson here is that the old adage "You can't fight city hall!" can be laid to rest and replaced by a spirit of "The power of government is in the hands of the people!" If only people don't surrender to politicians and bureaucrats we can do much more! Getting rid of RFG gasoline and MTBE might be another good start. It costs much more and can create more pollution. (Just check with the folks in California who have filed a lawsuit against the EPA to get rid of it.) Please do not forget our neighbors in Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee who are still saddled by the emissions testing beast. We must not forget those who must continue the fight and we must continue to help them as they have been helping us all along. We must also keep a keen eye on the Jefferson County Air Pollution Control District and it's director Mr. Art Williams. It may even be time to ask Mr. Williams for a resignation letter and replace him with someone who thinks with the idea that the people come first. Someone who will make the case on behalf of the people and not against the people. After all, isn't that what we expect! Mr. Art Williams could always test his ideas and scare tactics at the ballot box on election day, but he has no chance in Jefferson County. If you agree Mr. Art Williams should be asked to resign please send an email to County Judge Rebecca Jackson judge-exec@co.jefferson.ky.us or call her @ 502-574-6161. Let's keep up our network and be prepared for the next issue or issues and little by little we will make a difference! A very good place to meet is on the www.JeffersonReview.com web site and you might also want to subscribe to Jefferson Review as a sponsoring member. Please forward this to everyone on your email lists and pass the word. Victory is near! If you will forward your email address to me at JRiley8609@msn.com I will add you to my list and will keep you informed of what we will be working on. Please let me know if you want to be removed from my list as well.
Cheers to all! John Riley Member of Stop the VET
