Heading into '02 (ought two) Is a Good Time To Consider What we Ought To Do:

by Theresa Fritz Camoriano

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  As we close out the old year and begin the new, we have a tendency to stop and take stock, to set new goals.  Since we are now heading into "ought two", here are some of my thoughts for "ought to's" in the new year.

1.      We ought to live life to the fullest.  Enjoy it!  Be enthusiastic!  Set goals, and go for them!  We only get one shot at life.  If we are too cool and sophisticated to get excited about life, we'll miss our chance.

2.      We ought to enjoy our families and friends, appreciating that every single person has special talents and gifts to offer.

3.      We ought to recognize that this is not a "one size fits all" world and be very thankful for the people who don't fit "the norm".  Most of the greatest achievements in the world were made by people the majority thought were nuts!

4.      We ought to respect other people's right to set their own goals and to use their own resources as they choose in striving to achieve those goals.  Whether we think their goals are crazy, like wanting to row across the Atlantic Ocean, or whether we think their goals are noble, like wanting to give children a good education, we ought to respect their right to make their own choices.

5.      We ought to recognize that we are all selfish -- Christians, atheists, liberals, conservatives, and certainly politicians -- selfish in the sense that we all want to use resources to achieve our own goals.  That is human nature and must not be ignored.  The question is, whose resources will we use?  Will we use our own resources that we create through our own work and investments, or will we obtain resources by plundering others, forcing them to sacrifice their goals in order to achieve ours?  A socialist system chooses plunder and results in poverty and strife.  A free market, capitalist system based on respect for private property promotes hard work, mutual respect, and abundance.  We ought to make the right choice.

6.      We ought to smile and laugh more.  It drives the control freaks crazy wondering what we are up to!

Here's wishing that you will achieve many of your goals in the coming year!
