New VET tests may mean
more failures
by George Baumler
A new procedure for testing automobiles at Gordon Darby Inc.'s
monopoly establishments, also known as Jefferson County Vehicle Emissions
Testing centers, may mean more failures and trips to the mechanic for
unnecessary repairs and headaches for motorists. The new tests probe the onboard computers' memories of late
model automobiles. The
problem arises when a malfunction recorded by a vehicle's computer is
detected by the new procedure. The
reported instance of a malfunction may result in a costly and inconvenient
trip to a "VET certified" mechanic, even though the problem has
already been solved.
For instance, if a motorist were to have the misfortune of
purchasing some poor quality gasoline, an incident would be recorded in
the vehicle's memory and detected by the new tests.
Though the problem would been corrected the next time the tank was
filled, a failure notice given or an order to produce a record of how the
problem was rectified would possibly be demanded.
Do-it -yourselfers who do repairs and replace filters and engine
parts themselves will no doubt be required to show receipts for parts or
have their local "VET certified" mechanic inspect their work.
Far from being a less invasive test, the new computer probe will no
doubt result in more failures and unnecessary trips to the garage.
Motorists are now going to be put in the strange position of being
required to have their own vehicles' computers testify against them.
