Proposal to Help Support Arts in Louisville

by Donna Walker Mancini

This past year, the performing arts in Louisville have lost money.  There have been many proposals for rescuing the arts, including a proposal to force the taxpayers to subsidize them.  As a Louisville native, Actors and Ballet subscriber of many years, small donor, and just plain Arts Lover, I have an Idea that I think might get more people to try the arts and maybe become " Hooked."

Why not have a sampler type of show, after they finish remodeling the
Arts center, and let each Arts group do a 15-20 minute segment of the
program? The ballet could do a dance from say Swan Lake , the Opera could have an act, Actors do a skit, the Orchestra play the music, the Childrens group could have a portion, and so on. The performance would be about 2 hours long, not over doing it, but long enough to demonstrate the incredible abilities of each group. Like a " Taste of Kentucky" food sampling, but for the Arts instead!!!!! Restaurants could be invited to serve samples of food, thus giving them the opportunity to participate and "strut their stuff" as well. It could be a wonderful event to bring people downtown, and to the arts center to let them see what they are missing. Many people in the community give money to the Fund for the Arts, but how many of them actually attend performances or subscribe? This would let the public see the various groups and decide what appeals to them individually. It would be FUN and a great way to raise Money !!

There could be a grand reopening of the arts center. The Directors of each group, Like Alun Jones and Helen Star, could introduce and explain a little about their group. It would be like the Oscars!!! It would be great Public Relations for the Arts Community !!

There are so many possibilities for the Arts in Louisville.  I think we just
need more people to give it a try.
