One more point: The Prince, as lot of other people probably took it as an insult. He is the acting ruler of the Saudi's. Suddenly the news pundits are saying the Saudi's are not as co-operative as we had hoped, not letting our planes fly from Saudi territory. I figure it hurt us in the long run, rejecting his well meaning offer. There were lots of low wage migrant workers hurt & killed whose families could have used it. That is an insult that will not be forgotten for generations.

He repeats a popular canard that after the Russians pulled out, we deserted the Afghani.  Did it ever occur to anyone that perhaps that was part of the deal to encourage the Russians to leave?  i.e. you pull out & we will too. After all, the Russians had other options, including nuclear.
