Louisville News:  Granny D Back in Louisville, Northup Votes Against Pork, and Mother Incarcerated At Home

1.  Granny D Coming to Louisville October 16

Doris Haddock (Granny D) will be speaking at U of L Ekstrom Library on October 16 at 9:30 a.m. and October 17 at 1:00 p.m.  Both talks are free and open to the public.  Granny D is the elderly woman who has walked across America promoting additional restrictions on campaign finance.  If Granny D and her friends really want to clean up government, they might consider demanding a shift of power from the government back to the people, not a still greater shift of power from the people to the government.  To paraphrase Lord Acton, it is the power that corrupts, not free speech and political competition.  The solution is not to crack down on free speech but rather to get rid of the current restrictions that limit competition.  Unfortunately, those who claim to want a reduction in corruption also tend to favor an ever-greater role for government, thereby actually increasing corruption.  But who cares about reality?  At least their heart is in the right place!

2.   Three Cheers for Anne Northup for Voting Against Pork

The U.S. House of Representatives just voted in favor of an even larger handout to farmers, but our own Anne Northup thankfully voted against the handout.  Farming should not be receiving welfare, and we hope the President will stand firm.  At least on this issue, Northup voted according to the principle of smaller government and lower spending.  It is refreshing to see elected officials actually act in accordance with their stated principles, and we hope Northup will do it more often as the opportunity arises.

3.   Jefferson County Mother Thankful for Home Incarceration

According to The Courier-Journal, Renee Scherzinger , the mother who was being prosecuted for allowing her daughter to miss 60 days of school last year, is now appreciative that the court system is "working with her", so she will only be incarcerated at home, not in jail. The C-J thinks this situation was handled very well, and it has resulted in frightening Ms. Scherzinger and many other parents into sending their children to the government school, which, according to The C-J, is a very good and humanitarian thing.   Some people, on the other hand, do not think it is the proper role of government to force parents to educate their children as the government thinks best.  These people think that, absent a showing of real abuse, parents should be free to raise their children and educate them as they think best.  Imagine such an outrageous point of view right here in America!  Who knows, perhaps these people will even think parents should be free to educate their children in the religion of their choice as well!  Jefferson County schools appear to be taking a page from the Taliban, who are also very good at forced education.  For our previous article on this issue, see: http://www.jeffersonreview.com/articles/2001/090301/mother.htm
