(Un)Happy (Big) Labor Day
“Single mother Jean Green has little to celebrate this Labor Day. But it is
hoped she’ll have a better holiday than last Mother’s Day, when United
Airlines officials called her at home to say she was being fired. Green’s
termination as a customer service clerk at Des Moines International Airport
wasn’t related to her job performance.
“United managers had repeatedly congratulated and rewarded her for doing an
‘outstanding job.’ However, Green chose not to join the union and pay for
its politics. For that reason, the machinists union had her fired. Even though the Supreme Court ruled nearly 20 years ago that such union behavior
was flagrantly illegal, the union forced the single mother of two off the job and into the unemployment line.”
- Stefan Gleason, vice president of the National Right to Work Legal Defense
Foundation

Big Labor’s Stench
National Legal and Policy Center Chairman Ken Boehm issued the following statement regarding Labor Day and union corruption: "Thankfully, Labor Day
is not a holiday for all of the union leaders doing time in prisons for their crimes against union members. Sadly, however, over the past year, the
wave of union corruption that has recently plagued America's labor unions has not
subsided--if anything, it has gotten worse.
"The following list of forty-seven examples from the last twelve months is
representative of the repulsive trend in union corruption and demonstrates
the need for reforms such as mandatory annual audits of unions that are filed with the U.S. Department of Labor.” To read all 47 examples of why so
many people have come to despise organized labor unions in this country, go

The American Labor Party
“…(I)t’s no surprise that America never did spawn a Labor Party. Until now,
that is. That party, of course, calls itself the Democratic Party. But if
the Federal Elections Commission is correct and we had any kind of truth in
advertising, the Democrats would change their name to the American Labor Party. In a report stamped ‘sensitive,’ the FEC’s general counsel concluded
that such was the extent of labor’s muscle in the 1996 elections that the
AFL-CIO and its affiliates enjoyed - in exchange for financial contributions - the ‘authority to approve or disapprove plans, projects and
needs of the DNC and its state parties.’”

Roll Out the Barrels - And Roll Back the Taxes
Back in 1990, Congress doubled the tax on beer as part of deficit-cutting legislation to tax “luxuries.” While most other “luxury” taxes were
rescinded a few years later, the tax hike on beer remains. Now Rep. Phil English has introduced legislation to roll back the beer tax. Please go to:
http://www.libertypetitions.com and sign a petition to your congressman
urging support for this tax cutting measure. After all, beer is not a “luxury.”

This Is Not Your Daddy’s Union
“Since 1975, the percentage of union members who are public sector employees
has leapt from 21.5% to 43.7%. In terms of today’s economy, that works out
to fewer than one in ten private sector employees belonging to a union. So
while the popular image of a unionist remains a Pittsburgh hardhat, today’s
union member is increasingly more likely to be that bureaucrat snapping at
you to get in line down at the division of motor vehicles.
"…(T)he auto workers and coal miners are being replaced within the Democratic Party by those who depend on tax dollars, from the American
Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees to the public school teachers unions. In this context, it was only inevitable that the party of
government should integrate itself with the unions of government.”
- Wall Street Journal editorial, 8/31/01

Trumka: Unindicted Co-Conspirator
“Jere Nash, campaign treasurer for former Teamsters president Ron Carey,
testifies in federal court that he went to the office of AFL-CIO secretary
treasurer Richard Trumka in 1996, ‘where the labor leader handed over 'a
package' with the cash inside. Nash said he then gave the cash to Carey campaign worker Joe Fahey and told him 'to write out a [personal] check to
the campaign' for the same amount.’ The New York Post calls the allegation
against Trumka ‘disturbing’ but notes, ‘Trumka has never been charged in the
case, and his lawyer did not return calls for comment yesterday.’"

“It’s the Marketing, Stupid!”
Kerri Houston and Merrill Matthews Jr. of the American Conservative Union explain why Republicans can get their candidates elected, but can’t get
their issues advanced. In short, lousy marketing. Houston and Matthews have the remedy for what ails the GOP and too many campaigns. Read these

Handling Labor Bosses With Kid Gloves
“Mary Jo White, U.S. attorney in Manhattan, [has not] showed much stomach
for taking down [Ron] Carey. Some involved in the congressional probe [of the Teamsters] say White, a Clinton appointee, was a hindrance, turning over
key documents only under congressional subpoena. Richard Trumka, the AFL-CIO, secretary/treasurer, was never indicted. He refused to appear
before the congressional committee. When questioned by a federal elections
officer, in grand gangster tradition, he took the fifth. Carey was indicted
only after Clinton left office, and no one from the DNC was charged. The statute of limitations is about to expire, and the Bush administration has
yet to replace White."
- Columnist Nolan Finley, Detroit News, Aug. 12, commenting on the sorry federal probe into the 1996 Teamsters
money-laundering scandal.

Your Union Dues At Work
“U.S. Dist. Judge Alan N. Bloch (W.D. Pa. Carter) sentenced Richard P. Miller Aug. 9 to five months in prison for embezzling funds from United
Railway Supervisors Local 202. After a Dep't of Labor probe, Miller, of Beaver, Pa., pled guilty in May to double billing union expenses, pocketing
excess reimbursements, and withdrawing money from the local's checking account for personal expenses.”

Freedom from Union Violence Act
“On July 7, 1999 Teamsters Local 890 went on strike against Basic Vegetable
Products in King City, California, over Basic’s use of subcontractors. The
pickets were peaceful at first. … But a week later, (King City Police Chief
Richard) Metcalf...was besieged by complaints of vandalism - broken windows
and flat tires. … Local 890 Fritz Conle said vandalism is not condoned by
the union, but ‘unfortunately it happens,’ while Local president Frank
Gallegos claimed that, ‘the worst violence is what the company is trying to
do to our jobs and our families, and to this whole community.’ … In early
August, someone threw three firebombs onto a Basic supervisor’s back porch.
“...On October 11, Basic Vegetable Products held a press conference to
appeal to California Gov. Gray Davis and California Attorney General Bill Lockyear to intervene in the strike and end
the violence. Basic spokesman Jay Jory displayed photographs of smashed windows, slashed tires and
homemade spike strips. He played a video that showed two individuals slashing tires and smashing the windshield of an
employee’s car. Jory revealed that Basic Vegetable had documented 168 acts of strike violence.
“How did Attorney General Lockyear, California’s top law enforcement officer, respond to the company’s appeal for help? He appeared with
Teamsters officials at a November 14 union rally in King City. There he made no mention of the violence perpetrated against Basic Vegetable
employees who had chosen to work. He chose instead to ‘salute’ striking
workers who he described as ‘under siege’ by the company. Following the
rally, Teamster Local 890 militants threw rocks at cars of Basic workers leaving the plant.
“The violence against Basic Vegetable - and state officials’ unwillingness
to do anything about it - would be considered criminal in any other context.
But this is not the case with organized labor. Thanks to the 1973 Supreme
Court ruling UNITED STATES v. ENMOMS, it is not illegal for unions to threaten, harass, and intimidate employers and workers who don’t follow the
union bosses’ line.
“… Barring a U-turn by the Supreme Court, policymakers need to build the
case for a Freedom from Union Violence Act. … Now Congress has another
chance at reform with S. 902 introduced by Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) on May
16, 2001. The act would impose a prison term of up to 20 years and/or fines
of up to $100,000 on anyone who ‘obstructs, delays or affects commerce, by
robbery or extortion, or attempts or conspires so to do, or commits or
threatens physical violence to any person or property.’”
- David Kendrick, “Labor Watch,” Capital Research Center, August 2001
