Beer Is NOT a “Luxury”!
Back in 1990, in the days when President
Bush’s father famously broke on his “Read
my lips; no new taxes” pledge - Congress decided to “stick it to the
rich” by imposing a gaggle of new taxes on
“luxury” items - such as limousines,
private planes and yachts - in order to cut the budget deficit.
In the same legislation, they also DOUBLED
the federal excise tax on beer, from $9
to $18 per barrel.
Three years later, Congress rescinded most
of those “luxury” taxes, but the jacked-up
beer tax remained. In 1996, Speaker Newt Gingrich suggested rolling
back the beer tax, but efforts fizzled out. Now, Rep. Phil English (R-Penn.)
and almost 200 co-sponsors are pushing a new bill, (H.R. 1305) to cut
the beer tax in half, back to it’s pre-1991 level.
Frankly, we think the federal tax on beer
should be eliminated entirely.
Almost half of the entire cost of a bottle
of beer now goes to federal, state and
local taxes. But Rep. English’s bill to cut the beer tax in half is
a step in the right direction.
After all, for many people a cold bottle of
brew after a tough day on the job isn’t
a luxury - it’s an imperative. So please take a second to sign a petition
and send it to your representative urging him or her to support cutting
the beer tax. Go to: http://www.libertypetitions.com.
And then forward this e-mail along to
all the taxpaying beer drinkers on your e-mail list.
Cheers!

A Remarkable Observation
In response to the announced retirement of
Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC), former Republican
National Committee Chairman Haley Barbour had this to say: “I didn’t
agree with him on everything, but thank goodness he was willing to throw
tacks in the road to stop something that was injurious to our freedom
or that conflicted with our limited,
republican form of government.” Wow. When
was the last time you heard a top political figure in this country properly
and correctly identify our form of government as a “republic,” not
a “democracy.” Not to mention the fact
that it’s supposed to be “limited.”
Gold star, Mr. Barbour.

Democrat Rat Gets Year in Slammer
“A judge on Friday sentenced a former
aide to George W. Bush's presidential campaign
to a year in jail for mailing secret debate material to Democratic rival
Al Gore's campaign and then lying about it to a grand jury. Juanita
Lozano, who pleaded guilty to mail fraud and
perjury, admitted she leaked a 60-minute
videotape of then-Republican candidate Bush practicing for a campaign
debate and 120 pages of confidential debate material to a Gore associate.
… (U.S. District Judge Sam) Sparks also gave the former Democratic
precinct chairwoman three years' probation and fined her $3,000.”

No Honor Among Thieves
“It seems as though Denise Rich -
songwriter, fundraiser, Democratic donor, and
ex-wife of former federal fugitive Marc Rich - reneged on a $40,000
pledge to the Hillary Clinton Senate campaign.
… The money has to do with Hillary's
birthday celebration last October at the Roseland Ballroom in New York.
The fabulous (is there anything else to call her?) Cher required a private
plane to bring her in from California so she could perform a couple
of songs at the star-studded show. The plane
cost $40,000.
“Denise, according to the organizers,
pledged to pay the bill as one of her ongoing
donations to various Democratic party needs during the last election
year. But Denise never anted up. According to
sources who worked on the event, by the
time the invoice was presented to Rich, it was after January 20,
2001, when President Clinton pardoned Marc Rich. ‘Denise stiffed us,’
one organizer told me. ‘The campaign wound
up paying the bill rather than going
after her. It was clear she wasn't going to pay once Marc got his pardon.’"

PC Crowd Scalps First Amendment
“A decision by Maryland's Montgomery
County school board to prohibit the use of
sports team names like Indians and Warriors -- and investigations by the
U.S. Justice Department into whether such
names create a ‘racially hostile environment’
-- is proof that political correctness has trumped civil liberties.
“’There is no sensitivity exception to
the First Amendment,’ said national director,
Steve Dasbach. "The fact that some Native Americans are offended
by some Indian-themed sports team names does
not give the government the right to
prohibit such names. As long as we have a First Amendment in this country,
the government should shut down its Department of Hurt Feelings -- and
get off the warpath on the issue of Indian sports team names."

Feminism Running Amok
“While women’s groups want to take as
much opportunity as they can away from male
athletes, they also want to take over the head coaching positions, too
- on men’s teams. The latest example of this misguided effort is Geraldine
Fuhr. Fuhr was turned down for the position of head coach of the boys
varsity basketball team at Hazel Park High School in Hazel Park, Mich.,
in favor of a male candidate with less
experience. She sued and, this month,
was awarded $455,000 in damages by an all-female jury. Even more ludicrous,
Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley compared Fuhr to Joan of
Arc, Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony.
“...Coaching high school boys is one of
the many jobs where sex discrimination
is not only justified, it should be a requirement. Young, high-school-aged
boys need a male coach. They need a father figure on the sidelines
- a man to show them how to be a man.”

Socialist Insecurity
“Unfortunately, the American people have
been misled about how Congress spends
Social Security funds. When FDR implemented the system in the 1930s,
it was touted as a supplemental pension plan
for the working class. Most believed
that Congress would put their money away for them, let it grow, and
pay them a monthly retirement benefit roughly
comparable to a private pension plan.
In other words, the system was supposed to be a retirement savings
plan, not a tax. It certainly was not supposed to serve as a massive
slush fund for Congress.
“The problem, however, is that Social
Security is not run like a private pension
plan; it’s run like a pyramid scheme by a Congress that cannot stop
spending. Every dollar collected is spent.
There is no account full of money with
your name on it. Indeed, the Social Security trust fund exists only
on paper. Your federal retirement benefits are nothing more than a Treasury
department IOU. The money withheld from your paycheck goes to pay CURRENT
retirees - and there’s no guarantee that revenues will exist to pay
your benefits when you retire.”

Straight Talk,” 8/27/01
