Dear Fellow School Reformers:

Keep your eye on the calendar. Sometime in September, the Supreme Court is expected to give its thumbs-up or down on whether it will hear a case
involving Cleveland's small but groundbreaking school voucher program. The court has the opportunity to let such voucher programs move forward -- or
else uphold a lower-court ruling that letting families use their vouchers for schools affiliated with religious groups violates the barrier between church and state.

Since a large proportion of independent schools are religious, a negative ruling could effectively block voucher programs.

Inner-city parents from Cleveland whose children are enrolled in that city's six-year-old voucher program have been happy with the results and want to see the program continue. They're represented by the Institute for Justice, a libertarian group partnered with Free-Market.Net, sister-site to SchoolReformers.Com.

While not all advocates of educational choice are fans of vouchers, this is
still shaping up as a milestone case in the battle for alternatives to institutionalized government schooling.

How British exams are fixed in favour of girls
----------
by Dr. Madsen Pirie
The superior performance of girls in Britain's just-published exam results raises once again the issue of whether the tests, with their stress on coursework
rather than exams, over-reward conformity at the expense of inspiration. Is that what we (the Brits) want in our
young people? (2000)
