FedEx Carrying U.S. Mail
JGH: "Last Monday (August 27), the Washington Post reported that
FedEx (a private company) has agreed to carry Express, Priority, and
first-class mail for the U.S. Postal Service (a government monopoly).
According to the Post, FedEx is downplaying the development, apparently
not wanting to rock the boat by crowing about its new customer. But why
shouldn't the American consumer be free to cut out the monopolistic middle
man -- the U.S. Postal Service itself -- and freely utilize any company
for the delivery of all types of mail, including first-class mail? Since
the U.S. government purports to stand firmly against monopolies, why
shouldn't Congress free up the postal market by repealing the Postal
Service's postal monopoly? With government-provided and
government-protected enterprises failing all over the world, why should
Americans be saddled with this bankrupt relic of a bygone era?" Read
