NTU & Tennessee Taxpayers Celebrate Victory Over Governor's Budget --
After being flooded with phone calls from National Taxpayers Union's 5,500
Tennessee members, the Tennessee State Legislature overrode Governor
Sundquist's budget veto, a victory for taxpayers across the state who
widely
opposed imposition of a broad tax on wages.
"We are pleased that the Tennessee General Assembly had the wisdom to
override the Governor's veto and pass a budget without a tax
increase," said
NTU President John Berthoud. "While the final version of the
budget could
have been smaller, the General Assembly passed a reasonable alternative to
the monstrosity proposed by the Governor."

-- NTU Releases Study on Kyoto Protocol
As talks on the Kyoto Protocol were concluding in Germany, National
Taxpayers Union was completing a new study that uncovers details the
Protocolšs defenders would rather keep quiet.
"While supporters of the Kyoto Protocol would have us believe that
their purpose is to save our planet from environmental disaster, anyone
who takes the time to read the treaty will see that their true agenda
appears to be more closely related to boosting developing economies than
saving the earth's ecology," observed NTU Associate Policy Analyst
Noelle Fiacco.
The Kyoto Protocol places severe restrictions on carbon dioxide (CO2)
production by developed nations like the United States while exempting
developing nations like China and India, two of the world's largest
emitters of CO2. In fact, according to the International Energy
Agency, up to 85% of the projected increase in CO2 emissions will come
from countries exempted from the proposed treaty, and the United Nations
says that these same
nations will give off 76% of all greenhouse gas emissions within the next
50 years.
